  2. 2. IPPNW is... ...A global federation of 58 national medical organizations; ...working to abolish nuclear weapons by mobilizing the influence of the world medical community; ...working to prevent nuclear war and all wars, and to redress the effects of militarism on health.

  4. 4. IPPNW History At the height of the Cold War, Dr. Bernard Lown, of the United States, & Dr. Evgueni Chazov, of the Soviet Union founded IPPNW to bridge the political divide and to educate the world about the terrible consequences of nuclear weapons.
  5. 5. Medical Evidence In 1962, Drs. Victor Sidel, H. Jack Geiger, and Bernard Lown published the first major medical journal article on the medical consequences of nuclear war in The New England Journal of Medicine. Today, IPPNW continues to publish in the world’s leading medical journals.
  6. 6. IPPNW Today... • Continuing the fight for a nuclear weapons- free world; • Working to eliminate the death and injury caused by landmines & small arms violence; • Promoting peace through health; • Inspiring a new generation of physicians and activists to work for global security.

  8. 8. As the next generation of health professionals, IPPNW medical students are already playing an active role in safeguarding the planet’s health. Working with IPPNW colleagues around the world, medical students show by example what can be achieved through international cooperation.

IPPNW Medical Students... …participate in global dialogue with students from nearly 50 countries; …conduct research with physician-mentors; …convene seminars on IPPNW issues at medical schools around the world; …work cooperatively on cross-regional projects; …work in partnership with the International Federation of Medical Students Association (IFMSA) and other medical student groups worldwide.
