Hi! My name is Brittany Cook. I did my trade book review on the Secrets of Social Media Marketing by Paul Gillin.
Paul Gillin is the Editor-in-chief and executive editor of technology weekly Computerworld for 15 years and also the Editor-in-chief TechTarget-one of the most successful new media entities on the internet. He has written two books: The New Influencers (2007) and Social Media Marketing. He writes a regular column for BtoB magazine and Ziff-Davis Enterprise on innovation.Gillin is a research fellow and a member of the advisory board of the Society for New Communications Research andco-chair the social media cluster for the Massachusetts Technology Leadership Council.
Gillin defines social media as “To use the wisdom of crowds to connectinformation in a collaborative manner…they depend on interactions between people as the discussion and integration of words to build shared meaning”Social media is about people sharing opinions.It is important to know which types of social media to use when you create your marketing strategy. Also, the type of social media used depends on what you plan to market. The use of interaction between employees and community is also important to consider when you begin your strategy. Your employees need to know how to use the tools because they will be the ones talking with the public community.
Here are some basic types of social media tools that can be utilized to start your strategy. They are all popular social networking sites currently. These include: Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, Flickr, YouTube, Wordpress, Blogger, and Blogspot.
The book covered a lot of starter information. I would like to know more about which types of social media were the most successful. By studying how different companies have used social media tools, we will know more about type of tool people will respond to more frequently. I would also like to know what catches peoples’ eye the most. For example, what types of colors, pictures, formats, fonts, etc.
I was surprised about the importance of how different each conversation is used on a different social media tool. For example, if you wanted to tell people about an event or new product on Twitter, you would direct the statement to the general public. However, if you are telling someone about the same topic, who commented on your blog, you would make it a more personal conversation.
The book provided a good basic information that could be used as a start tool in your social media strategy. It also provided how to measure the results of how successful the websites you used were, which I think would be extremely important for continuing success and feedback. It is a good start in social media marketing and will help you jump-start your strategy today.I would recommend this book if you areinterested in learning basic information about using social media tools to market.I would not recommend this book if you want to know more than just the basics of using social media marketing.
