  1. 1. Questioning Implementation When Delivery Drives Design Henry Mintzberg Brightline, New York, 25 October 2018
  2. 2. When a strategy fails… What/Who gets blamed? Formulation? or Implementation?

  4. 4. Who are the dumbells? The Bees and the Flies PPT IMHL Strategy Formation January 2017
  5. 5. We have too many bees making strategy and not enough flies.
  6. 6. Strategy Formulation as thinking first Formulate to Implement That is, think to do, design to deliver “Strategic Planning”
  7. 7. What we know about Strategic Planning 1. That the CEO is the strategist . 2. That strategy is “a detailed plan for reaching a goal or advantage.” 3. That strategies have to be formulated carefully and articulated explicitly so that they can be implemented systematically. Indeed, the real problems are in the implementation. 4. That you need to think about strategy to create good strategies. © H. Mintzberg. PPT IMHL Strategy Formation January 2017

  15. 15. How about this: Communityship as grounded engagement • Strategies emerge gradually from grounded learning; they are not immaculately conceived at the “top”. • Anyone can come up with an idea that sows the seeds of a great strategy. • Such seeds sprout in organizations that function with communityship, beyond leadership.
  16. 16. “In a time of drastic change it is the learners who inherit the future. The learned usually find themselves equipped to live in a world that no longer exists.” Eric Hoffer PPT IMHL Strategy Formation January 2017
