Circulatory System: The Circle of Blood On average, your body has about 5 liters of blood continually traveling through it by way of the circulatory system. The heart, the lungs, and the blood vessels work together to form the circle part of the circulatory system. The pumping of the heart forces the blood on its journey. Tutor: Mrs. Balla 3
  4. 4. The body's circulatory system really has three distinct parts:  Pulmonary circulation (lungs)  Coronary circulation (heart)  Systemic circulation  Lungs (pulmonary)  Heart (coronary)  Rest of the system (systemic or vessels) Each part must be working independently in order for them to all work together. Tutor: Mrs. Balla 4

Tutor: Mrs. Balla 5 Your heart is a pump.  It's a muscular organ about the size of your fist and located slightly left of center in your chest. Bones called ribs are located in front of your heart.  Ribs protect your heart. Your heart is divided into the right and the left side.  The division protects oxygen-rich blood from mixing with oxygen-poor blood.

Tutor: Mrs. Balla 6 Together, your heart and blood vessels comprise your cardiovascular system (cardio means heart; vascular means transport or circulation) This system circulates blood and oxygen around your body. Your heart pumps about 5 liters of blood every minute. It beats about 100,000 times in one day — that's about 35 million times in a year.
  7. 7.  Tubular Circulation (pathways for blood)  A vessel is defined as a hollow utensil for carrying something: a cup, a bucket, a tube. • Blood vessels, then hollow utensils for carrying blood. • Located throughout your body. • Blood vessels are hollow tubes that circulate your blood.  There are three varieties of blood vessels: arteries, veins, and capillaries.  During blood circulation, the arteries carry blood away from the heart.  The capillaries connect the arteries to veins. Finally, the veins carry the blood back to the heart.  If you took all of the blood vessels out of an average child, and laid them out in one line, the line would be over 60,000 miles long!  An adult's vessels would be closer to 100,000 miles long! Tutor: Mrs. Balla 8 Oxygen-poor blood, "blue blood," returns to your heart after circulating through your body.  The right side of your heart, composed of the right atrium and ventricle, collects and pumps blood to your lungs through your pulmonary arteries. Your lungs refresh your blood with a new supply of oxygen, making it turn red.

Tutor: Mrs. Balla 9 Oxygen-rich blood, "red blood," then enters the left side of your heart  The left side is composed of the left atrium and left ventricle  Blood is pumped through the aorta to your body to supply tissues with oxygen. Four valves within your heart keep your blood moving the right way.
  10. 10. Tutor: Mrs. Balla 10 Gates between chambers are called valves.  Tricuspid  Mitral  Pulmonary  Aortic valve They work like gates on a fence. They open only one way and only when pushed on. Each valve opens and closes once per heartbeat — or about once every second.

Tutor: Mrs. Balla 11 A beating heart contracts and relaxes.  Contraction is called systole, and relaxing is called diastole. During systole, your ventricles contract, forcing blood into the vessels going to your lungs and body — much like ketchup being forced out of a squeeze bottle. The right ventricle contracts a little bit before the left ventricle does. Tutor: Mrs. Balla 13 The right heart pump • Figure 1: The right heart pump consists of – the right atrium (RA) – tricuspid valve (TV) – right ventricle (RV) – pulmonic valve (PV) – pulmonary artery (PA) • Poorly oxygenated (“blue”) blood returning to the heart from the body's organs enters the right atrium. – That “dirty” blood is stored there until the right atrium contracts. • Figure 2: When the right atrium contracts, the tricuspid valve opens, allowing the blood to enter the right ventricle. • Figure 3: When the right ventricle contracts, the pulmonic valve opens, and the blood is pushed into the pulmonary artery. – The pulmonary artery carries the blood to the lungs, where it picks up oxygen turning it into “clean” or “red” blood.
