The document provides four steps for better PowerPoint presentations: 1) Make presentations visual by using images instead of just text; 2) Use Creative Commons images and properly attribute them; 3) Use presenter notes to provide additional context not visible to the audience; 4) Avoid solely using bullet points and keep text on slides to a minimum of 5 words or less.
21. RACISM
Racism is most often seen as an
individual, psychological
phenomenon. For example, one
often hears the statement quot;racism
is just human nature.quot; Buried in
that statement is the implication
that since there isn't much we can
do about human nature, there isn't
much we can do about racism
either. According to this point of
view, racism is constant,
unchanging, like the weather, the
moon or the seasons.
Understanding history is a good
antidote to that kind of pessimism.
If we can show that racism has a
beginning, then the quot;human
naturequot; argument obviously
doesn't hold much water. And if
racism has a beginning, then we
can argue that it can have an
end.quot;

This is how the title page of a typical PowerPoint starts out.
Get rid of the training wheels. Don’t use templates.
Would you want to be listening to your presentation?
I once sat through a presentation by a senior school board official who FOR ONE HOUR stood and READ the presentation slides to an audience of 900 people.
Your audience is not 4 years old. Don’t insult them by reading your slides.
The brain processes graphic information 15,000 times faster than the listening. Most people do not read and listen at the same time effectively.

Is this a powerful slide?
How about this? Or using a picture while you talk?
If you are using a slide that looks like this are you
Reading it?
Waiting until your audience reads it? How long do you wait? Some read faster than others.
