Early History of Jean de Brebeuf<br />Jean de Brebeuf was born March 25, 1593 and died March 16, 1649.<br />Brebeuf was a Jesuit missionary and was killed in Canada.<br />He was of French decent and sailed over to Canada on a missionary.<br />In 1622, he was ordained as a priest.<br />“He is more noteworthy as a close observer of Huron culture” (Greer 37).<br />He caused a split between the European and Huron society.<br />
  3. 3. Huron<br />Brebeuf spent most of his life living among the Hurons.<br />He lived among the Hurons between 1626-1629.<br />He had learned all of the native ways.<br />Brebeuf also wrote many journals of his life within the Huron community.<br />

Martyrdom<br />The Iroquois had begun their war with the Huron.<br />In 1648, they destroyed the village.<br />In 1649, the Iroquios captured the mission of St. Ignace and then eventually captured Brebeuf and his friend, Gabriel Lallement<br />Brebeuf became the second patron saint in Canada and was canonized in 1930.<br />
