Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is proudto roll out its next generation of publiccomputers this summer.These computers are faster and morereliable, and they offer a greaterrange of tools and software. Webelieve that they will help improveyour library experience .This slideshow will introduce you tosome of the new features.
Improved Web BrowsingWe heard your requests andadded Mozilla’s Firefoxbrowser. We also updatedInternet Explorer andimproved search, browserand toolbar settings.
Save Temporary FilesNow you can save the files you createand download to the temporary (T:)drive, which you can find by launchingthe Computer icon.(NOTE: The T: drive is erased at the end of yoursession, but you can attach the files you savethere to an email or upload them to the cloudfor later retrieval. Bringing your own flash driveto the library is still recommended.)
New ProgramsThe new computers feature severalnew software applications under thePrograms icon, including the latestversion of the Microsoft Office suiteand, for the first time, multimediacreation and editing software.
Microsoft Office 2010The new computers offer Office 2010, thecurrent version of Microsoft’s productivitysuite, which includes Access, Excel,PowerPoint, Publisher and Word.(Click on any of the links above to findtutorials and more information aboutthese programs.)
Multimedia SoftwareThe new computers also feature new creativityand editing software, including:•Audacity, an audio recording and editingprogram.•GIMP 2, an image manipulation program.•Windows Live Movie Maker, a video creationand editing program.•You can also burn DVDs with Windows DVDMaker.
Multiple Media PlayersYou now have several options for playingaudio or video files, including WindowsMedia Player and the open source VLCmedia player.Using Overdrive Media and Adobe DigitalEditions, you can even transfer eBook orother digital titles onto your eReader orportable device.
New Accessibility ToolsWindows 7 is Microsoft’s most accessible operating systemyet. Some of the accessibility tools include:•Magnify: Zooms in on the screen to make text and objects easier tosee.•On-Screen Keyboard: Displays standard keys on the monitor, so youcan “type” with a mouse or other pointing device.•Narrator: Reads on-screen text aloud and describes some events thathappen while youre using the computer.•Speech Recognition: Enables you to interact with your computerusing only your voice.
