Local Plants and Mushrooms By Samantha Dubey Mushroom Shaggy Mane • Grows in grass, soil, or wood chips • Grows in spring, summer, fall • Cap is a white cylinder with shaggy, upturned, brownish scales • The gills are whitish • Entire mushroom fragile and crumbles easily • The cap and gills gradually dissolves into a black, inky fluid, leaving only the standing stalk • 4 in. to 6 in. tall, sometimes larger • Best when picked before the caps begin to turn black and inky • Sauté in butter and season with nutmeg or garlic • Good in scrambled eggs or chicken dishes • Picked it young and eaten the same day Flower Shining Rose • The Connecticut Shining Rose is in Special Concern because of people cutting them and not planting them after • The New York Shining Rose is Endangered because the demand has made many people want them, so many go out and find, cut the roses • 18-24 in.(45-60 cm.) 24-36 in. (60-90 cm) • Medium pink • Very Fragrant • bogs, swamps, wet thickets • June to September • Many couples buy the roses for each other, for anniversaries and Valentines Day
