Apple Stock Predictions

Many are dimissing the iPhone 4S as
Apple's most underwhelming product
launch in a long time. Could the
company have managed expectations
better?
Those voters aren't alone. In the last
24 hours, social networks have been
littered with open dissing of the
iPhone 4S. Shortly after the unveiling,
Twitter users were calling it "lame," "insipid," and "meh." "No iPhone 5" was trending
higher on the social site than both "iPhone 4S" and "The iPhone 4S." Wall Street
wasn't impressed either: Apple's stock fell sharply after Tuesday's announcement
(though it's since bounced back). Even Hitler's pretty angry about the whole thing.
It appears advanced voice-recognition software, a better camera, and a faster
processor weren't enough to stir Apple customers into an iTizzy, especially after

version, an ultra-thin teardrop design, and larger, edge-to-edge screen that were
supposedly being cooked up by Apple, but didn't actually happen. When Apple CEO
Tim Cook threw up the slide that showed the iPhone 4S looking exactly the same as
the iPhone 4, the collective "whaaaat?" was like a great disturbance in the Force.
Conventional wisdom says Apple likes the rumor mill, that the nonstop parade of
whispered predictions, leaks, and completely made-up stuff amounts to a huge chunk
of free marketing for the company. In this case, though, that hype machine appears to
have backfired, raising expectations to unattainable levels. Sure, the bar is always set
pretty high for an Apple release, but this time the gap between anticipation and
actuality is a chasm.
Part of the reason is timing. The October announcement comes almost four months
