Plate tectonics theory

 1. 1. Plate tectonics theory
 2. 2.

What it is?

It is a theory that describes the large scale motion of the Earth´s lithosphere

The theory gives an explanation of the tectonic plates that form the surface of the Earth

The theory builds on the concepts of continental drift

 3. 3.

Lithosphere divides into different tectonic plates:

This are the 12 principals plates

 4. 4.

Convergent

or destructive plate boundary

This plates can move of different forms

Transform

or conservative plate boundary

Divergent

or divergent plate boundary

 5. 5.

Convergent: two plates move one near to another and collide

Transform: is a type of fault whose movement is mainly horizontal

Divergent : two tectonic plates that are moving away from each other

 6. 7. Continental drift

It is the movement of the continents

Until the plate tectonics could not be demonstrated because the movement of the plates explain the continental drift movement.

 7. 8. Seafloor spreading

It is the formation of new oceanic crust

It is also explain thanks to the plate tectonics theory and also help to understand the continental drift

 8. 9.

THE END
