Finger Plays, Rhymes, and Songs

  1. 1. Finger Plays & Rhymes <ul><li>Children enjoy rhythm, rhyme and word play. </li></ul><ul><li>Finger plays excite movement, listening, and verbal skills. </li></ul>

Thumbkin <ul><li>Where is Thumpkin; where is Thumpkin? </li></ul><ul><li>(Hide hands behind back) </li></ul><ul><li>Here I am (bring out 1 hand). </li></ul><ul><li>Here I am (Bring out the other). </li></ul><ul><li>How are you today, sir? (Nod 1 thumb) </li></ul><ul><li>Very well, I thank you (Nod other). </li></ul><ul><li>Run away, run away (Hide hands). </li></ul>

Stretch Up High (1) <ul><li>Stretch up high; stretch down low. </li></ul><ul><li>Raise your arms; and away we go. </li></ul><ul><li>Make a circle in the air. </li></ul><ul><li>Sweep your arm all around, </li></ul><ul><li>Now the other – do the same </li></ul><ul><li>And jump off the ground </li></ul>

Manners (1) <ul><li>I have to learn to be polite. </li></ul><ul><li>‘Cause I’m growing every day. </li></ul><ul><li>I’m not a baby anymore, </li></ul><ul><li>So there’s special things I must say. </li></ul><ul><li>I have to say “Please”. </li></ul><ul><li>I have to say “Please”. </li></ul><ul><li>When I want something. </li></ul>

Manners (2) <ul><li>“Cause that’s the polite thing to do. </li></ul><ul><li>And when I get the things I want, </li></ul><ul><li>I have to say “Thank You”! </li></ul><ul><li>Some special words we need to know </li></ul><ul><li>And use them every day. </li></ul><ul><li>We must say “Please” and “Thank You” at school, at home, at play. </li></ul>

When I am… (3) <ul><li>When I’m depressed, I stay inside. </li></ul><ul><li>(rest jaws on fists) </li></ul><ul><li>When I am puzzled, I want to shrug. </li></ul><ul><li>(shrug) </li></ul><ul><li>When I am loving, I kiss and hug. </li></ul><ul><li>(hold arms out and draw in as if hugging someone) </li></ul>
  11. 11. Being Kind (1) <ul><li>I want to be kind as I can be, </li></ul><ul><li>With all my friends and family. </li></ul><ul><li>I’m not going to punch, </li></ul><ul><li>Or hit or shove. </li></ul><ul><li>I’ll treat them with kindness </li></ul><ul><li>And with love. </li></ul>

Being Kind (2) <ul><li>These are important things to learn, </li></ul><ul><li>To wait in line to take my turn. </li></ul><ul><li>Not to push or pull someone’s hair, </li></ul><ul><li>But, with hands to myself, </li></ul><ul><li>Stand quietly there. </li></ul><ul><li>I like my friends, so when we play, </li></ul><ul><li>I try to be kind and nice in every way. </li></ul>

Listening & Obeying <ul><li>I try to listen and obey, </li></ul><ul><li>All the things the teachers say. </li></ul><ul><li>Like being quiet and paying attention, </li></ul><ul><li>And then I can follow the directions. </li></ul><ul><li>I’ll try to do all the things I should, </li></ul><ul><li>My teacher (mother, father) will be proud of me for trying to be good. </li></ul>

The WIGGLES (1) <ul><li>I wiggle my fingers, I wiggle my toes. </li></ul><ul><li>(do a motion and stop) </li></ul><ul><li>I wiggle my shoulders, I wiggle my nose. </li></ul><ul><li>(do another motion, stop) </li></ul><ul><li>Now no more wiggles are left in me. </li></ul><ul><li>(whisper) </li></ul><ul><li>So I will be still as still can be. </li></ul>
  15. 15. The WIGGLES (2) <ul><li>( Pause and say: </li></ul><ul><ul><li>“ I don’t know about you, but I think I still have a few wiggles left in me! Let’s do those same wiggles again, but this time we’ll wiggle everything at the same time and get ALL the wiggles out!”) </li></ul></ul>
  16. 16. The WIGGLES (3) <ul><li>I wiggle my fingers. </li></ul><ul><li>I wiggle my toes. </li></ul><ul><li>I wiggle my shoulders. </li></ul><ul><li>I wiggle my nose. </li></ul><ul><li>Now no more wiggles are left in me! </li></ul>
  17. 17. Hands on Shoulders (1) <ul><li>Hands on shoulders, </li></ul><ul><li>Hands on knees, </li></ul><ul><li>Hands behind you, </li></ul><ul><li>If you please. </li></ul><ul><li>Touch your shoulders, </li></ul><ul><li>Now your nose, </li></ul><ul><li>Now your hair and now your toes. </li></ul>
  18. 18. Hands on Shoulders (2) <ul><li>Hands up high, </li></ul><ul><li>In the air, </li></ul><ul><li>Down at your sides </li></ul><ul><li>And touch your hair! </li></ul><ul><li>Hands up high as before, </li></ul><ul><li>Now clap your hands: one, two, three, four. </li></ul>
