Fitness Isn’t Just Kid Stuff <ul><li>People who are usually inactive can significantly improve their health and well-being by becoming even moderately active on a regular basis. </li></ul><ul><li>Physical activity doesn’t have to be strenuous to benefit your health. </li></ul><ul><li>You can benefit even more by increasing the length of time, frequency and intensity of your exercise. </li></ul><ul><li>Aim for at least 30 minutes of activity, for at least 10minutes at a time, five days a week. </li></ul>

The company started a Body Challenge in 2004. 800 out of 6000 employees participated and lost a collective 4600 pounds.   12. 12. <ul><li>Everyone has a certain type of body shape. You might be a pear shape, an hourglass shape, a ruler shape, or an apple shape.  Let’s take a quick look at what these shapes mean. </li></ul>

Pear/Spoon Shape <ul><li>For Men: </li></ul><ul><li>Pear/Spoon Shape – A man with this type of body shape is usually larger in the hips and thighs than in the chest and arms.  He is usually petite in the arms and chest.  A lot of men with this body type have an athletic type build. </li></ul><ul><li>For Women: </li></ul><ul><li>Pear/Spoon Shape –You have larger hips, with a smaller chest and arms.  Most women with this body type have flat stomachs and chests. </li></ul>

The Pear/Spoon <ul><li>Spoon Body Type Problem Areas and Characteristics:   </li></ul><ul><li>Lower body is considerably larger than the upper body </li></ul><ul><li>Thick upper thighs </li></ul><ul><li>Thick calves </li></ul><ul><li>Upper body tends to be weaker than the lower body </li></ul><ul><li>Saddlebags </li></ul>
  15. 15. If you are a Pear/Spoon If you are a pear you will want to focus on exercises that will balance out the top half of your body with the bottom half of your body. You will also want to try to thin down your lower half. To achieve this, focus on aerobic activities that work out your lower body, and resistance exercises that will build your upper body. Some great activities include: <ul><li>walking </li></ul><ul><li>cycling (with low resistance) </li></ul><ul><li>elliptical training </li></ul><ul><li>jumping rope </li></ul><ul><li>leg lifts and dips </li></ul><ul><li>push ups, chin ups, and shoulder presses </li></ul>
  16. 16. Hourglass Shape <ul><li>For Men </li></ul><ul><li>Hourglass Shape – No, guys. This doesn’t mean you’re girly. This is actually the shape many football players have, with small waists and hips, and broad shoulders and muscular thighs. </li></ul><ul><li>For Women </li></ul><ul><li>Hourglass Shape – This is one of the favorite shapes of a woman.  Your shoulders and hips are about equal in width, and you have a small waist and normally flat tummy. </li></ul>

The Hourglass <ul><li>Hourglass Body Type Problem Areas and Characteristics:   </li></ul><ul><li>Noticeable difference between the size of the chest and waist </li></ul><ul><li>Noticeable difference between size of waist and hips </li></ul><ul><li>Tendency to be a bit slimmer in the waist </li></ul><ul><li>Hourglasses tend to look lighter than their actual weight would indicate </li></ul><ul><li>Hourglasses tend to gain mass in the thighs and the back of the arms </li></ul>
  18. 18. If you are an Hourglass' If you are have an hourglass figure, then you should be focusing on both cardio and resistance exercises. Cardio will assist in keeping your weight in check, while resistance exercises will help to maintain balance between your upper and lower body. Here are some great exercises that you may want to try: <ul><li>slow jogging </li></ul><ul><li>stationary biking </li></ul><ul><li>(with light resistance) </li></ul><ul><li>jumping jacks </li></ul><ul><li>swimming </li></ul><ul><li>bicep curls, shoulder presses, and squats </li></ul>
  19. 19. Ruler Shape <ul><li>For Men </li></ul><ul><li>Ruler Shape – You are probably pretty thin, with minimal muscle build up. </li></ul><ul><li>For Women </li></ul><ul><li>Ruler Shape – You have a thinner body, with minimal curves.   </li></ul>

The Ruler <ul><li>Ruler Body Type Problem Areas and Characteristics:   </li></ul><ul><li>Little difference between chest, waist and hip measurements </li></ul><ul><li>Relatively equal body proportions </li></ul><ul><li>Weight gain is more prevalent in the midsection/waist area </li></ul><ul><li>Rulers® do not bulk easily </li></ul><ul><li>Rulers® tend to have less hamstring flexibility than Hourglasses® or Spoons® </li></ul><ul><li>Rulers® have a tendency toward low back pain </li></ul>
  21. 21. If you are a Ruler' If you are a Ruler, Perform cardio activities to help you lose weight in problem areas, such as the buttocks and stomach. To ensure that you build a symmetrical body shape, all of the muscle groups should be emphasized and routinely given a workout. Focus on: <ul><li>stretching </li></ul><ul><li>crunches </li></ul><ul><li>step classes </li></ul><ul><li>spinning </li></ul><ul><li>walking or jogging on an incline </li></ul><ul><li>squats </li></ul><ul><li>bench presses and shoulder presses </li></ul>

Apple Shape <ul><li>For Men </li></ul><ul><li>Apple Shape – This type of body shape means that the man has a larger chest and arms, with a small waist.  Men with this body shape usually have a small butt and legs, and may look top heavy. </li></ul><ul><li>For Women </li></ul><ul><li>Apple Shape – You have larger shoulders and larger breasts, with smaller thighs, and thinner or smaller hips and butt. </li></ul>
  23. 23. <ul><li>Apple Body Type Problem Areas and Characteristics:   </li></ul><ul><li>Apples are generally bigger on the top half of their bodies than on the bottom half. </li></ul><ul><li>They commonly have slim hips and a large chest and stomach. Apples tend to gain weight above the waist or along the backside. </li></ul><ul><li>The majority of apples are mesomorphs or endomorphs. </li></ul>The Apple

By working on the lower half of your body, you can help balance out your chest and shoulders. Look to perform exercises that are low resistance and involve low repetitions.
