Why do good people suffer? Job & his three friends did not get it right but his fourth friend, Elihu, did! His answer may surprise you but it is repeated many times in the NT.

and God had become his enemy (Job)

6. Elihu: Chapters 32-37
✤ A young man with the wisest words for Job
✤ He doesn’t agree with Job or with his three friends
✤ He speaks for six chapters & Job does not argue with him.
✤ God does not rebuke Elihu, just Job & the 3

7. Elihu says…
✤ “That He {God} may turn man aside from his deed, and cut off
pride from man, and keep back his soul from the
Pit.” (33:17)
✤ God uses pain to refine, heal and to save righteous people from
the residue of pride and sin in their souls
✤ This is why Job repents to God at the end: He arrogantly
accused God of being his enemy.

8. ✤ “But if people are bound in chains, held fast by cords of affliction,
✤ He tells them what they have done—that they have sinned
arrogantly. He makes them listen to correction and commands
them to repent of their evil.
✤ If they obey and serve him, they will spend the rest of their days in
prosperity and their years in contentment…He speaks to them
in their affliction.” (Job 36:8-15)

✤ “The godless in heart cherish anger; they do not cry
for help when He (God) binds them.They die
in youth,They die in their youth, among male
prostitutes of the shrines.”

✤ God is willing for us to suffer to glorify Him
✤ In this you rejoice, though now for a little while you
may have to suffer various trials, so that the
genuineness of your faith, more precious than gold
which though perishable is tested by fire, may
redound to praise and glory and honor at the
revelation of Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 1:6–7)

✤ If the devil were wise enough and
would stand by in silence and let the
gospel be preached, he would suffer
less harm. For when there is no
battle for the gospel it rusts
and it finds no cause and no
occasion to show its vigor and
power.

force and cunning.

Be silent, be close and await for them to talk. “I wanted to come here just
be with you”

“I wish I had something to say that would help/take away the pain, but I don’t. But I am
here for you.”

“You look well today/good, but how are you feeling?” “How Are you holding up?”

“I can’t imagine how hard this is for you, but you seem to be handling it well and I think
you are so strong.”

“You’ve got so much on your plate, yet you’re still cheerful. How do you do it?”
