The Great Auk <ul><li>Reasons for extinction: </li></ul><ul><li>Economic pressures : </li></ul><ul><li>Hunting. </li></ul><ul><li>Eggs valued as an important food source. </li></ul><ul><li>Auk Eggs - highly prized by rich Europeans. </li></ul><ul><li>Thus, loss of eggs and ultimately extinction. </li></ul>
  4. 4. Bengal Tiger <ul><li>IUCN : Endangered species (EN) </li></ul><ul><li>CITES: Appendix I (most endangered) </li></ul><ul><li>Distribution : </li></ul><ul><li>Primarily found in India </li></ul><ul><li>Small populations in Nepal, Bhutan and China </li></ul>

Bengal Tiger <ul><li>Estimated Population size: </li></ul><ul><li>1,850 individuals surviving currently. </li></ul><ul><li>India- less than 1400 left , Nepal- around 150 left. </li></ul><ul><li>Threats: </li></ul><ul><li>rise in sea levels due to climate change. </li></ul><ul><li>illegal trade and poaching. </li></ul><ul><li>tiger bones used in traditional Chinese medicines. </li></ul>

American Alligator <ul><li>Conservation Acts: </li></ul><ul><li>Efforts by United States Fish and Wildlife Service : </li></ul><ul><li>Creation of large, commercial alligator farms. </li></ul><ul><li>Outlawed alligator hunting. </li></ul><ul><li>Prohibition of alligator hide. </li></ul><ul><li>Resulted in recovery and removal from endangered list in 1987. </li></ul>
