Areca vestiaria

  1. 1. Areca Vestiaria. Red Crownshaft Palm.
  2. 2. • Areca Vestiaria is a tropical rainforest palm from Indonesia. Its most striking feature is its bright red crownshaft which is in my opinion more attractive than the highly sought after Lipstick Palm that also has a red crownshaft.
  3. 3. • It is also a lot more cold tolerant growing as far south as Sydney while the Lipstick Palm wouldn’t even grow in Brisbane. It also has striking red new leaves that turn green with age and broad leaflets that are toothed at the apex.
  4. 4. • The palm can grow slowly up to five metres high and has a bamboo like trunk with stilt roots at the base.
  5. 5. • It is quite a commonly grown palm in the tropics but rare elsewhere mainly grown by collectors. It is easily cultivated provided it grows in rich, moist, well drained soil in part shade protected from frost and drying winds.
  6. 6. • It is an extremely tropical looking palm that deserves to be more widely grown. There is also an orange variety which I grow as well but has plain green leaves.
  7. 7. • So if you are after something different that will make a spectacular statement to your garden you can’t go past the Red Crownshaft Palm.
