A barrier that people have in advancing in tech is not understanding a major component of innovation which is open source coding or hacking. This slide presentation will breakdown what is involved in hackathons so when you decide to participate in one you won't feel totally out of place.
2. This slide presentation was created as a preface
for participants seeking to participate in
Baseball Hackday. The information provided in
this slide presentation can be utilized to prepare
for other hackathons.
3. WHAT IS A HACKATHON?
Hackathons provide a venue for self-expression
and creativity through technology. People with
technical backgrounds come together, form
teams around a problem or idea, and
collaboratively code a unique solution from
scratch—these generally take shape in the form
of websites, mobile apps, software projects. (1)
4. WHO CAN ATTEND A HACKATHON?
For the most part ANYONE. Anyone who is interested in
computer programming and loves to learn and build cool
stuff can attend.
Do I need to have programming experience? - NO. You don’t.
The organizers usually hold workshops throughout the
hackathon for anyone who is new to programming or
someone who wishes to learn more about a particular topic.
Mentors are also available. So if you go to a hackathon
without knowing what you want to do, that’s totally fine
because you will have these mentors at your service to help
and guide you.

7. WHATS AN OPEN SOURCE?
Open source software is software with source code that anyone can inspect,
modify, and enhance.
8. WHATS AN API?
An application program interface (API) is a set of routines, protocols, and tools for
building software applications. Basically, an API specifies how software components
should interact. Additionally, APIs are used when programming graphical user interface
(GUI) components. A good API makes it easier to develop a program by providing all the
building blocks. A programmer then puts the blocks together.
9. WHATS AN API?
1. Google Maps API: Google Maps APIs lets developers embed Google Maps on webpages using a
JavaScript or Flash interface. The Google Maps API is designed to work on mobile devices and
desktop browsers.
2. YouTube APIs: YouTube API: Google's APIs lets developers integrate YouTube videos and
functionality into websites or applications. YouTube APIs include the YouTube Analytics API,
YouTube Data API, YouTube Live Streaming API, YouTube Player APIs and others.
3. Flickr API: The Flickr API is used by developers to access the Flick photo sharing community data.
The Flickr API consists of a set of callable methods, and some API endpoints.
4. Twitter APIs: Twitter offers two APIs. The REST API allows developers to access core Twitter data
and the Search API provides methods for developers to interact with Twitter Search and trends data.
5. Amazon Product Advertising API: Amazon's Product Advertising API gives developers access to
Amazon's product selection and discovery functionality to advertise Amazon products to monetize a
website.

team/project name!
2. Assign roles for your team
• project manager, product owner, researcher,
developers, designer, pitch presenter(s)
3. Establish a timeline
• Come up with tasks
• Give an estimate on when they should be complete
