Creating my PLN

Twitter http:// www.twitter.com/chsenglishgal

Delicious

http:// www.delicious.com/Heldk

LinkedIn

http://tinyurl.com/65o9sjy

Stixy

http://www.stixy.com/guest/114097

 3. 3. Challenges of Mastering Social Media

Time & effort > what you put into your PLN you get out of it

Limitless options > provides a wealth of information, but can be overwhelming

Maintenance > Daily upkeep is necessary for a successful and effective PLN

Consumer versus producer > takes time to develop comfort & understanding of the many modalities of communication

 4. 4. Twitter

Successes

Is applicable to my students (high school)

Easy way to disseminate information

When used correctly– really helps to build relationships and networks

Challenges

Takes a long time to “figure out”

The layout/format of the screen is confusing to follow

Still managing what to tweet and when to tweet

Can be difficult to discern who to follow and what content to consume

 5. 5. Delicious

Successes

So much more effective than “adding to favorites”

Ability to share with colleagues (especially my co-teacher)

Saves things permanently so great ideas/resources aren’t lost!

Challenges

The interface of the site is still confusing

Need to increase comfort level with “bundling” resources

Continue to work on how to successfully use this to network with educators outside of my known network

 6. 6. LinkedIn

Successes

Instantly made many connections- great way to reconnect with college contacts

Easy way to look up a contact, colleague, or possible classroom guest speaker

Challenges

If you’re not searching for employment- what is the benefit?

Difficult to discern how much and what kind of information should be incorporated into profile

 7. 7. Stixy

Successes

MY FAVORITE TOOL!

Innovative & different from anything I’ve used before

User friendly and easy to navigate

Could work for creation of student work OR creation of teacher resources

Challenges

Where to post my Stixy boards- should I link them to Twitter, Delicious, or my class website? Maybe all three!

If the Stixy boards were ever changing- would students be able to keep up with regular access?

 8. 8. Moodle & Online Learning

Moodle is easy to navigate and user friendly; I like the layout of the site

Online learning is a challenge

Despite previous online courses at the high school, undergraduate, and graduate level- I found myself struggling with independent learning and a lack of classroom “face time”

Provided a welcome challenge and is something I would pursue in the future

 9. 9. My Collection of Work…

Twitter http:// www.twitter.com/chsenglishgal

Delicious

http:// www.delicious.com/Heldk

LinkedIn

http://tinyurl.com/65o9sjy

Stixy

http://www.stixy.com/guest/114097

 10. 10. Final Thoughts

To truly develop my students into 21 st century learners, I must be a 21 st century teacher

It is time to “walk the walk” and not just “talk the talk”

Thank you to Rich & my thoughtful classmates for such an enjoyable and eye opening experience!
