Using side effects of medicines to identify drug targets

  1. 1. Using side effects of medicines to identify drug targets Michael Kuhn Peer Bork lab, EMBL Heidelberg mkuhn@embl.de
  2. 2. Drugs and their targets Side effects Prediction of drug targets
  3. 3. Drugs • only consider organic small molecules • no antibodies, peptides, ions • ~750 drugs with side effects • ~600 drugs with targets
  4. 4. Targets • most drugs bind to proteins
  5. 5. Targets • most drugs bind to proteins • few exceptions, e.g.: • alkylating antineoplastic agents (which modify DNA) • contrast agents for X-ray • saline solution
