The Mission of the Diabetic Amputation Prevention Foundation

  1. 1.  A graduate of the Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine, Bill Releford has become an expert on the increasing prevalence of amputations of the feet and legs due to diabetes. Bill Releford runs the Releford Foot and Ankle Institute in California with the purpose of making these operations less necessary. Although diabetes has several undesirable complications, such as blindness and kidney failure, foot problems take a serious toll. An estimated 40 percent to 70 percent of lower-extremity amputations are caused by diabetes and have a significant impact on health care costs.
  2. 2.  In 2000, Bill Releford established the nonprofit Diabetic Amputation Prevention Foundation. Its global mission is to reduce amputations related to diabetes in countries of high risk. The foundation currently serves Ghana, Uganda, Costa Rica, Brazil, and Fiji. Part of the foundation's strategy is to promote the treatment of foot ulcers, the first sign of trouble in persons with diabetes. Educating these individuals and their health care providers is another important part of the mission. With other preventive measures, it should be possible to reduce amputations by 49 percent to 85 percent.
