    1. 1. Geospatial Information Technology What is it? How can it be used? Why is it important? How can it fit into current curriculum and standards? What problem might come up using GIS?
    2. 2. What is a Geographic Information System? <ul><li>GIS stands for Geographic Information System. It is a system designed to collect, store, manage, view, and analyze spatial data, as well as associated attribute data. </li></ul><ul><li>GIS is useful because it allows users to combine, analyze, and view many layers of data at the same time. </li></ul><ul><li>Two Types of Data: </li></ul><ul><li>Spatial data is anything that has a geographical location associated with it.   </li></ul><ul><li>Attribute data is associated information that is linked to any of the spatial data.             </li></ul>

Geospatial Information Technology <ul><li>Let’s start with the basics. </li></ul><ul><li>What is GIS? </li></ul><ul><li>GIS takes all forms of geographically referenced information and integrates it with hardware, software and data to capture, manage, analyze and display the information in an organized easy to read manner. </li></ul><ul><li>GIS uses maps, graphs, charts and globes so that geographic information can be visualized, analyzed and interpreted more easily so that patterns, trends and relationships can be determined or revealed. </li></ul>

Why is GIS important to teaching and learning? <ul><li>GIS technology promotes higher order thinking skills </li></ul><ul><li>GIS use in the classroom can also help students understand the spatial relationships that are found in their world. </li></ul><ul><li>GIS enhances spatial thinking skills, geographic skills, and critical thinking and problem solving skills. </li></ul><ul><li>GIS helps students understand spatial patterns and gives them tools to find solutions to real problems or issues. </li></ul>

More reasons why GIS is important to teaching and learning <ul><li>GIS not only encourages problem solving, but it also increases interest and motivation in many areas. </li></ul><ul><li>GIS can easily be integrated into many areas of curriculum seamlessly; history, geography, language arts, mathematics, heath and science. </li></ul><ul><li>GIS uses several different “multiple intelligences” allowing for more students to be successful. </li></ul><ul><li>GIS enables students to extract geographic data </li></ul>

The Importance of GIS for Vocational Reasons <ul><li>GIS related jobs are one of the targeted high growth industries in the USA </li></ul><ul><li>Geospatial analysis is being used to make crucial decisions in many workplaces </li></ul><ul><li>There are local, national, and international opportunities for working with GIST </li></ul><ul><li>GIS related job openings are increasing by ~13% each year and there are not enough qualified individuals to fill all these positions </li></ul>
    7. 7. How does GIS fit across the curriculum? GIS can fit across the curriculum if teachers implement it in meaningful ways. <ul><li>Here are some examples on how to successfully implement GIS across the curriculum seamlessly </li></ul><ul><li>Social Studies - explore demographic information for countries of the world; visualization of historical events; explore natural change over time </li></ul><ul><li>Science Education - explore natural phenomena such as earthquakes and volcano locations; explore habits of animals and impact of humans, and many more </li></ul><ul><li>Business and Marketing Education - business location analysis; create travel routes for a business that will be delivering goods in a town or city </li></ul><ul><li>Language Arts - explore locations of a books plot; map the travel logs/journals of a specific author </li></ul><ul><li>Mathematics - explore mathematical functions of demographic data (ie differences between the number of males and females of cities, proportions of Hispanic Americans to African Americans in major US cities) </li></ul><ul><li>Health and Physical Education-explore locations and spread of diseases and illnesses </li></ul><ul><li>And much much more! </li></ul>

How can GIS be implemented into the classroom? <ul><li>A teachers willingness to invest the time and energy in learning about and how to use GIS technology is the first step </li></ul><ul><li>School technicians or district technical support can be a great resource to get started with hardware/software </li></ul><ul><li>Local GIS introductory courses can be found at local community colleges and universities </li></ul><ul><li>Free software can be found online </li></ul><ul><li>Teachers can “borrow” already developed GIS lesson plans until they become more comfortable with the technology </li></ul><ul><li>Professional development time can be given by schools/school districts for teachers to become familiar with GIS technology </li></ul><ul><li>Local government agencies using GIS technology are often available for free/reasonably priced tutorials </li></ul><ul><li>Apply for local grants for technology funds or professional development opportunities. </li></ul>

What problems will need to be addressed when using GIS in the classroom? <ul><li>Not all schools/school districts are prepared for the financial aspect of introducing and using GIS in the classroom </li></ul><ul><li>GIS problems can include technical problems such as acquiring the hardware and software needed. </li></ul><ul><li>Many GIS programs include some data, but finding and entering custom data can be problematic and time consuming. </li></ul><ul><li>Planning and prep time for the use of GIS in the classroom can be lengthy </li></ul><ul><li>Teachers of GIS need to be fairly familiar with the technology for students to be successful </li></ul><ul><li>Student technology issues; including but not limited to familiarity with technology, availability of technology </li></ul><ul><li>Schools may or may not have the bandwidth to handle the software. </li></ul><ul><li>school computers can be tied up with testing or may not be up to date enough to handle the new hardware/software. </li></ul>
