2. Introduction:
Deep drawing is a metal forming process used to produce cup-shaped objects from sheet metal. In
this lab report, we describe our attempt to deep draw a cup from a 317 stainless steel sheet with a
blank diameter of 155mm.
Experimental Procedure:
We used a hydraulic press with a punch and die
set to perform the deep drawing process. The
punch and die set were designed to produce a
cup with a diameter of 80mm and a depth of
50mm. The sheet metal we used was a 317
stainless steel sheet with a thickness of 0.8mm.
We applied a blank holder pressure of 8 tons to the sheet metal during the deep drawing process to
prevent it from wrinkling. The die pressure was set to 12 tons.
Attempt 1:
During the first attempt, we set the hydraulic press to apply a force of 10 tons and attempted to
deep draw the cup. However, we observed cracking in the wall of the cup after the drawing process.
Attempt 2:
For the second attempt, we realigned the punch and die
and increased the force to 15 tons. Unfortunately, we
observed another crack in the wall of the cup after the
drawing process.
Attempt 3:
For the third attempt, we reduced the force to 12 tons and
applied a lubricant to the sheet metal to prevent it from
sticking to the die. The cup was successfully formed
without any cracks in the wall.
3. Results and Discussion:
Our attempts at deep drawing a cup from 317 stainless steel revealed that careful adjustments,
appropriate force and lubricant application, and correct blank holder and die pressure are necessary
for a successful deep drawing process. We observed that proper alignment of the punch and die is
crucial to avoiding defects in the final product. Additionally, high-strength materials like 317
stainless steel can be challenging to deep draw without cracking.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, we successfully deep drew a cup from a 317 stainless steel sheet with a blank
diameter of 155mm using a hydraulic press, punch and die set, appropriate force and lubricant
application, and correct blank holder and die pressure. We also noted that proper alignment of the
punch and die is critical for a successful deep drawing process, and high-strength materials like
317 stainless steel can be challenging to deep draw without cracking.
