The retail sector in India accounts for about 15 percent of its GDP. It is estimated to be US$ 450 billion
sector, which makes it and one of the top five retail markets in the world in terms of economic value.
Food and Grocery is the largest category within the retail sector, contributing about 60 per cent share
in the retail sector. Substantial private and public investment has fueled growth in the food retail
sector in India. Recent government reform in retail sector during 2012 by the Indian government is
further likely to fuel growth in the food retail sector.
Despite the phenomenal growth in the food retail sector in India, there are several demand and supply
side challenges in the food retailing. The managers in the food retail sector need to develop a wide and
thorough understanding and knowledge required for meeting the challenges of organized food retail
The following are the major objectives of the programme:
To provide an understanding of the strategic dimensions of retailing in food sector.
To provide understanding about the changing consumer needs in the food retail sector.
To enhance strategic decision‐making skills through analysis and integrated perspectives in the
field of food retailing such as food retail outlet location and layouts, food store management and
building store loyalty.

The programme will be conducted through an appropriate mix of case studies, presentations,
exercises and class‐room interactions.

The programme is scheduled for three days during November 12‐14, 2014. The participants would
stay in air‐conditioned rooms at the IIM campus, Lucknow, on a single occupancy basis. Programme
sessions will be held at “Manthan” – the Institute’s Management Development Programme Center.
The programme fee is @ `40,000/‐ per participant + Service Tax @ 12.36% or as applicable as per
Govt. of India Guidelines. The fee includes board and lodging in the Institute’s Executive Enclave,
tuition, course material and use of the Institute’s Computer Center, Library and other infrastructural
facilities, etc. A discount of 10% on programme fee is admissible provided an organization nominates
a minimum 3 of its executives for the programme.
The fee is payable in advance either by Demand Draft drawn in favour of Indian Institute of
Management Lucknow and payable at Lucknow, or by Bank Wire Transfer (ECS) to A/c No.
07231450000294 of IIM Lucknow with HDFC Bank, A R Centre, Dr. B N Verma Road, Opp. Gulmohar
Hotel, Aminabad, Lucknow 226018 (IFSC code HDFC0000723). In case of ECS, the remitter may
inform us the UTR number and date of transaction at: email@example.com along with his/her name,
name of participant, name and dates of programme against which the payment has been made, etc.
The registration form duly filled in along with the requisite nomination fee should reach us at least 21
days before the commencement date of the programme.
In the event of cancellation of nomination by the sponsoring authority, only 50 per cent of the fee
would be refunded provided we receive such information at least 15 days before the commencement
of the programme. However, the nominating organization could recommend change(s) in the
CERTIFICATE OF PARTICIPATION
The Institute issues a Certificate of participation on conclusion of the programme.
Prof. Kriti Bardhan Gupta is a faculty at the Centre for Food and Agribusiness Management (CFAM)
in the Institute. He has done his M.Tech. from Pantnagar and is a Fellow of the IIM Ahmedabad. Prior
to joining IIM Lucknow, Prof. Gupta has worked at Indian Institute of Foreign Trade, New Delhi and
Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. He has conducted several MDPs and research projects in
India, Egypt, Iran and Tanzania. His areas of interests include Strategic Food and Agro Marketing,
Consumer Behaviour for Food Products and Services, Agricultural Project Management, Marketing
