  7. 7. A "Punch Through is a generic term often loosely applied to an event where significant vertical footing d‘ placements are observed over a relatively short period of time. During these events differential footing penetrations usually occur which may dramatically effect the stability of the unit. fl sttlement and Punch Yhrou The most common cause of foundation failures of this type are due to the presence of a relatively thin layer of strong soil overlying a softer / weaker soil upon its initial installation a unit may be temporarally supported by the upper soil layer Subsequently, during the preloading process or under storm conditions imposed on the rig the upper layer of strong soil may become overstressed and one or more of the legs may penetrate into the underlying weaker strata The settlement of these legs may be rapid and will continue until adequate load bearing strata is reached, Should the the hull bouyancy point he reached before the pcntrating can or cans reach load bearing strata then penetartion will also stop. As the hard layer of strata causing the temporary footing “hang up" is penetrated it is common for one leg to sink in to the softer soils more rapidly than the others, which can remain at the hang up level As the unit lists the Centre of Gravity shifts, resulting in additional load being transferrd to the penetrating leg ls), this causes penetration to continue and sometimes accelerate untill sufficient bearing capacity strata or adequate hull buoyancy is reached. During this event there is a high chance the excessive horizontal leg loads may develop, Depending on the air gap and water depth at the time the punch through occurs, the length of unsupported leg and strength of the unit, local or total failure of the leg may occur In both shallow and deep water Environments the consequences of unpredictable spudcan penetration during installation of the unit on a location should be minimised by maintain g theunit at minimal airgap during preloading During peloading where the potential for foundation failure has been identified in advance, in may be necessary to begin the preloading operation with the hull in the water at draft It is unusual to be able to achieve sufficient pieload capability in this condition and further preloading at airgap may be required once a firm foundation has been reached

The form of the footprints depends on several variable factors, such as the soil conditions, the depth of the penetrations, the spud can geometry and the method in which the spud cans were extracted. This is due to the slender mat skirts that are designed to optimise resistance to sliding on soft clays during installation and storm conditions.
