    3. 3. What is it? <ul><li>Engineering is the intersection of science, maths and art. </li></ul><ul><li>Paper engineering is no exception, whether you are folding complex origami figures, making paper planes or designing your own pop-up books. </li></ul>
    4. 4. History of paper engineering <ul><li>First known pop-up element in a book appeared in an astrological manuscript in 1306. </li></ul><ul><li>During the ensuing centuries, movable mechanics were used in more and more books - but only for adults. </li></ul><ul><li>In the 1700s a British bookseller came up with the idea of illustrating well-known children's stories with movable flaps of paper. </li></ul>
    5. 5. Equipment needed <ul><li>Essential Tools </li></ul><ul><li>Sharp scissors </li></ul><ul><li>Pencil </li></ul><ul><li>Tape </li></ul><ul><li>Glue </li></ul><ul><li>Metal ruler </li></ul><ul><li>Protractor </li></ul><ul><li>Craft Knife </li></ul><ul><li>Self-healing cutting mat </li></ul>

Design Brief <ul><li>Using recycled paper, create an origami book. </li></ul><ul><li>Tell the story of a recycled can (ref to the poster), information about endangered animals or an area of your choice that deals with sustainability. </li></ul><ul><li>Complete the unit of work sheets when you have finished. What FPTs would be needed to be taught to primary school children? </li></ul>

Follow the instructions! <ul><li>Follow the instructions on the card. </li></ul><ul><li>Fold the paper vertically in half </li></ul><ul><li>Cut through the middle panels on the folded edge. </li></ul><ul><li>Now open up the whole sheet of paper </li></ul><ul><li>Fold the paper horizontally in half. </li></ul><ul><li>Hold the left and right sides of the paper. Push the left and right sides to the middle to make the star shape. </li></ul><ul><li>Now press the star shape down so that it is flat </li></ul><ul><li>Finally, fold the pages each side of the fold on top of each other to make the origami book. </li></ul>
