  3. 3. Why do we care about social justice? Why is it relevant in the classroom? Social justice is necessary to address in the classroom because it is inevitably intertwined in every day life. Every decision we make can either aggravate existing class conflicts or ameliorate them. We must help our students become aware of the facts of our society. We must help them develop a political consciousness – a critical lens through which they can view and digest the happenings of their world. Educating students about social justice (which almost always is essentially some form of egalitarianism) is a way to build those students' identities.
  4. 4. How do we approach “teaching” social justice? CAREFULLY! (teehee!)
  5. 5. Issues with modern views of social justice in the classroom: <ul><li>Empowerment – empowerment means (obviously) to give someone POWER. But what IS power?? </li></ul><ul><ul><li>Power – what is it?? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Guststein thinks of power as agency ; one's capability “to contribute to historical process.” To me this means that someone is in power when they control the outcome of their own life regardless of outside forces. </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Another view of power is individual economic advancement. People use economic capital to control decisions in their lives and the lives of others </li></ul></ul></ul>
  6. 6. Empowerment continued <ul><ul><li>Who has power? Who needs power? Who has the “right” to “give” someone power? </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Sleeter brings up the point that some groups already have power and others don't </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Social justice movements exist to serve the UNDERserved </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Sleeter criticizes pedagogical techniques of multiculturalism that treat different cultures as museum artifacts, thus clearly serving those who are ALREADY in power </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Base constituency – the group of people that start social movements </li></ul></ul></ul>
  7. 7. <ul><li>Multicultural – teaching a “multiculturalism” does not mean teaching about different cultures, it means changing your pedagogical style to INCLUDE and RESPECT different cultures </li></ul><ul><ul><li>** The Curious Case of Dave ** - using non oppressive language, language that includes students of different backgrounds, not just those whose parents are white educated professionals </li></ul></ul><ul><ul><li>Just like we must adapt our spoken language, we must adapt our MUSICAL language as well! </li></ul></ul><ul><li>Multicultural education does not exist to SERVE everyone, but it does exist to INCLUDE everyone – problem posing pedagogy, unveiling of reality, Plato's cave </li></ul>

Music! <ul><li>How else can we tie music and social justice together? </li></ul><ul><li>Educators should do their best to allow their students to experience as many musics from different cultures as possible. However these musics must not be treated as museum artifacts. They must be given the respect they deserve. Their contexts must be made known. And most importantly they must be GENUINE. </li></ul>
