  1. 1. By: Becka Cox
  2. 2.  It can take anywhere from 3 months to 5 years for CPS to act upon a Child Abuse case.(CPS information website) 2,400 children die as a result of mistreatment and 500,000 are seriously injured or disabled. (How Best to Protect Children, Ilana Sherer) Child abusers walk away free on there 1st or 2nd offense, if they then commit a 3rd or 4th offense they then will be thrown in jail. (Jail site.)
  3. 3.  Can Child Abuse be prevented?  A-I don’t think it will ever fully go away but I do think the numbers can be decreased by a great amount. What are the main types of child abuse?  A- The main types of child abuse are Emotional Abuse, Physical Abuse, Neglect, and Sexual Abuse.
  4. 4.  Common Myths about child abuse… 1.Myth-It’s only abuse if it is violent. 2.Myth- Child Abuse does not occur in “good” Families. 3. Myth- Most Child Abusers are strangers. 4. Myth-Abused Children always grow up to be abusers.
  5. 5.  Warning Signs of Emotional abuse in children. o Excessively withdrawn, fearful, or anxious about doing something wrong. o Passive or extremely aggressive Warning Signs of Physical Abuse in Children.  Frequent injuries or unexplained bruises, welts, or cuts.  Is always watchful and “on alert” as if waiting for something bad to happen.  Shies away from touch
  6. 6.  Warning Signs of Neglect in children.  Clingy  Dirty cloths  Is frequently late or missing from school. Warning Sings Of Sexual Abuse in Children.  Trouble walking or sitting  Runs away from home.  Makes a strong effort to avoid a specific person, or gender without an obvious reason.
  7. 7.  It often takes at least 3 months for Child Protective services to process a case, before they will take any direct actions. Child Protective services can get the kids into a worse situation. They leave the kid in the home after the abuser knows they told someone. (
  8. 8.  We need to provide a safe environment for kids to tell if they are having any sort of problems at home. “Help us prevent child abuse, here is what you can do: Understand the causes of child abuse and learn all you can about abuse and neglect. Learn to identify the warning signs that a child is being abused. Report any known or suspected case of child abuse. Seek help if you feel you are at risk of abusing a child. Be a friend to a child or parent in need. Alert others to the problem. Many dont recognize or understand the effects of physical, sexual and emotional abuse and neglect.”(
  9. 9.  Some people say that we are spending to much time on child abuse and that if the kid doesn’t take the responsibility to get out of the home it’s their fault. Some people say that Child abuse should not be a main focus when there are much worse things happening in the world.
  10. 10. Kids are frightened and have no one to tell. They really do believe they will be worse off if they tell someone. With the way CPS is running things they might as well not tell anyone, because they are worse off if they do.In my opinion, I don’t think there is anything worse than harming an innocent child. Children don’t deserve to have to suffer through a home life that isn’t safe.
  11. 11.  I believe that if we got enough people to argue this we could raise money to make Child abuse more well known through out the world and put a stop to it. If people are aware of the myths and warning signs of Child Abuse they will know what to watch out for and more effectively turn in cases that need help.
  12. 12. Child Abuse is something that needs to have attention put on it. We need to make it clear to adults and other abusers that there will be consequences if harm is done to a child. It is so important that we are aware of the correct warning signs and facts of child abuse. We also need to keep an out for children who may be suffering from this.
