Atkinson developed this technique in 1985. It isfrequently used in order to help increasevocabulary in a foreign language. This technique consists of three differentprocesses. The processes are• The Acoustic stage• The visual-image stage• Rehearsal
This technique is used to remember foreignlanguages. It works by associating theforeign word you want to learn with a wordthat sounds similar to the foreign word, Youthen link the English meaning to theKeyword.
In this stage the foreign word is heard as itwould usually be pronounced. The wordshould usually have a English word that issimilar. The word that is similar becomes theKeyword.
In this stage you will form an image in yourhead which will be a combination of theEnglish sound and the English translation ofthe foreign word.
The image that you have formed wouldthen be rehearsed, therefore it will stay inyour memory. When the foreign word comes up, theimage will come to mind and generate theEnglish meaning.
