1. Homework Spring Term 1 Key Theme: Research Year 9
This ½ term’s homework is going to be based in the time period that you are studying in class (the
era of World War II)
You will need to submit this to me in class on ___________________
What have I got to do?
You have got to research in detail ONE aspect of World War II. For example: Dunkirk, Stalingrad,
evacuation, Pearl Harbour, the D-Day landings, the Phoney War, the Blitz, St Albans in World War II,
the Battle for Iwa Jima, the Burma campaign, the work of the Secret services eg the Enigma, the
Battle of Britain, the Battle of the Atlantic, the invasion of the Channel Islands, El Alamein, the
Dambusters, Monte Cassino, escapes from Colditz. These are a FEW examples.
Everyone must
Identify the time period that you are writing about, this might be the whole war, or just one
particular date.
Identify the place in the world where the events took place (this is a WOLRD war) on a map.
Have at least 4 sources from the time that they USE to help them find out about the event eg
photos, posters, speeches.
Some people will be able to:
Show many people were affected by the event that you have chosen
Explain why the event happened and link it to what is going on in the rest of the war
Explain the effects of the event (this can be on people, places and future events in the war and the
future)
Interview someone who was there
Compare this event to other wars (if appropriate)
What is the teacher expecting to see?
You can present your findings either typing them up or handwriting them.
I am expecting you to spend ½ hour per week on this task so it should be clear that you have
spent 3 hours on the task. If you spend more that is your choice, but you need to be
organised enough that it does not affect other homework you have to complete for other
subjects. Part of this task is showing that you CAN be organised and TAKE RESPONSIBILITY.
I will be expecting it to be well presented (clear pictures, legible fonts and colours etc) and
that you will have used spell check.
No cutting and pasting unless it is a source (therefore cannot be altered).
Proof that you will have used 5 books (title and author please).
I will be checking every week that you have done something: bring your research log.
