Academic Research from an International Perspective

  1. 1. RESEARCH Academic Research Funding from an International Perspective Brett Bobley Office of Digital Humanities NEH
  2. 2. Academic Research • Within any state in the US, universities are often loci not only of cultural and intellectual capital, but also of innovation, new industries, and job creation. • One of the principle drivers of university excellence is embodied in their research portfolio: Great universities have great faculty doing great research.
  3. 3. What Does “Research” Mean? • In other countries we work with, “research” refers to all academic research, regardless of discipline. (Think Wissenschaft). • Federal research funding in these countries recognizes the holistic nature of research – that it crosses disciplinary boundaries. • But nations take differing approaches for how to fund that research.
  4. 4. Typical Academic Research Disciplines in Higher Education History Literature Languages Philosophy Religion Archeology Linguistics Sociology Anthropology Political Science Economics Geography Psychology Computer Sciences Mathematics Chemistry Physics Life Sciences Biomedical Sciences
  5. 5. Academic Research Disciplines & Their Funders Germany: One organization funds everything. History Literature Languages Philosophy Religion Archeology Linguistics Sociology Anthropology Political Science Economics Geography Psychology Computer Sciences Mathematics Chemistry Physics Life Sciences Biomedical Sciences DFG
  6. 6. Academic Research Disciplines & Their Funders: Canada’s “Tri-Councils” History Literature Languages Philosophy Religion Archeology Linguistics SSHRC Sociology Anthropology Political Science Economics Geography Psychology Computer Sciences Mathematics Chemistry Physics Life Sciences Biomedical Sciences NSERC CIHR
  7. 7. Academic Research Disciplines & Their Funders: United Kingdom’s “RCUK” History Literature Languages Philosophy AHRC Religion Archeology Linguistics Sociology Anthropology Political Science Economics Geography ESRC Psychology Chemistry Mathematics Computer Sciences Physics Life Sciences Biomedical Sciences EPSRC BBSRC MRC
  8. 8. Academic Research Disciplines & Their Funders: United States’ “Big Three Funders” History Literature Languages Philosophy Religion Archeology Linguistics Sociology Anthropology Political Science Economics Geography Psychology Computer Sciences NEH NSF Mathematics Chemistry Physics Life Sciences Biomedical Sciences NIH
  9. 9. In the humanities, we often compare ourselves to scientific disciplines by looking strictly at funding allocations. Like the following:
  10. 10. NIH vs. NSF vs. NEH Budget NIH NSF NEH
  11. 11. Or like this:
  12. 12. NIH vs. NSF vs. NEH Budget $35,000,000,000.00 $30,000,000,000.00 $25,000,000,000.00 $20,000,000,000.00 Series1 $15,000,000,000.00 $10,000,000,000.00 $5,000,000,000.00 $0.00 NIH NSF NEH
  13. 13. But dollars aren’t the only metric. Looking holistically, you can’t have top-notch research without the humanities. It is a major part of the research landscape.
