  2. 2. Early life <ul><li>French navigator, born in Brouage, Saintonge, on the bay of Biscay, in 1567 </li></ul><ul><li>His father was a sea captain, and the boy was early skilled sailer and navigation </li></ul><ul><li>Like his father before him, he served as a naval captain </li></ul>
  3. 3. Previous Experiences <ul><li>Champlain's first voyage was to Spain, with his uncle </li></ul><ul><li>In 1603 Champlain made his first visit to North America </li></ul><ul><li>Champlain's first real voyage, one to Spain </li></ul>
  4. 4. Explorations <ul><li>In 1603 he went on his first voyage to Canada, as geographer on a fur-trading expedition. </li></ul><ul><li>Champlain also discovered the lake named for him (Lake Champlain), on the border of northern New York state and Vermont </li></ul>
  5. 5. Results <ul><li>his second trip to North America. He was looking for a place where French people could make a settlement </li></ul><ul><li>On his third trip in 1608, Champlain found a settlement along the St. Lawrence River that is now the city of Quebec. </li></ul>
  6. 6. Conclution <ul><li>He died from a stroke on Dec. 25, 1635. </li></ul><ul><li>After a French-British peace treaty in 1632, Quebec was once again French, and Champlain returned as its governor (1633). </li></ul>
