  2. 2. Apollo 13 <ul><li>Launched on April 11, 1970 and returned safely on April 17. </li></ul><ul><li>Commanded by James A. Lovell, Jr. </li></ul><ul><li>The mission was to explore the Fra Mauro formation, a lunar geological formation on the nearside of the moon. </li></ul><ul><li>It was the third Apollo mission attempted to land on the moon. </li></ul><ul><li>An oxygen tank ruptured disallowing it to accomplish its mission.   5. 5. <ul><li>President Richard Nixon's plan with Vietnamization was to encourage South Vietnamese to take more responsibility for the war. </li></ul><ul><li>Nixon hoped that the U.S. would slowly withdraw from Vietnam. </li></ul><ul><li>Because of this the Nixon administration said that South Vietnam could be equipped and trained to defend themselves. </li></ul><ul><li>Unfortunately during training the main leader was also needed to be in the battlefield.   12. 12. Soviet invasion of Afghanistan <ul><li>The Soviets invaded on December 27, 1979. They invaded because they wanted to keep the communist in control of the Afghan government. </li></ul><ul><li>The invasion contributed to the collapse of the Soviet Union. The Soviets spent so much of their resources that it hurt their economy . </li></ul><ul><li>The Taliban and Al Qaeda were formed to fight off the Soviets when they invaded their country. </li></ul><ul><li>Up until 1989, the Soviets fought in a bloody war trying to take over Afghanistan . </li></ul><ul><li>yglesias.thinkprogress.org </li></ul>

(Nov. 19, 1977) </li></ul><ul><li>Because of what Sadat did, this invited a peace negotiation between Israel and Egypt. (1977-1978) </li></ul><ul><li>The 12 days of secret negotiation at Camp David were guided by President Jimmy Carter (Sept. 5-17 1978) </li></ul><ul><li>This negotiation was to set a basis of peace between the two countries. </li></ul>Camp David Peace Accord

  15. 15. <ul><li>1972 - “ No person in the U.S. shall be exulted from participation in the befit of, or be subjected to discrimination under any education program or active receiving Federal financial assistance.” </li></ul><ul><li>This means that women and men are to be able to be involved in sports and higher education. </li></ul><ul><li>Before this movement (40 years ago) women could not attend collages, athletic scholarships were very rare, and the math and science classes were reserved for men. </li></ul><ul><li>After the Women's Movement, it created higher education in careers, for pregnancy and parenting, and employment.
