2. Once upon a time…
• People turned to traditional media for the
latest news, especially in TV and radio for
those who wanted the latest updates.
9. So…
• The arrival of Rappler in 2012 paved the way
for the traditional media outfits to bolster
their online affiliates.
• It also paved the way for the arrival of these
so-called “standalone” news sites.
12. So…
• Bloggers began getting invites to certain
product or venue reviews.
• Bloggers gained access to events with the
same press privileges as the traditional
publications.
• Simply put, blogs have slowly become
“independent” online media outfits.
• Eventually, some other passionate bloggers
and journos co-founded “indie” news sites.
15. Challenges
• “What kind of blog is this?”
• “Blog lang yung sa’yo.”
• “We are just a startup. Theirs is already
established.”
• “Should we bloggers follow media ethics too?”
16. Solution to the fourth challenge
• While it’s not a requirement for them to abide
with the rules for traditional publications,
bloggers should follow media ethics too.
17. In the end…
• Blogs have indeed emerged as the new wave of
news outfits, but aligned with that is the same
responsibility the bloggers inherited which was
bestowed on the trad media reporters.
