Mechanical Energy
The energy of movement.
This energy includes both
kinetic energy (motion) and
potential (stored) energy
Mechanical Energy
 Mechanical energy is due
to the position and motion
of the object.
 What happens to the
mechanical energy of an
apple as it falls from a
tree?
Mechanical Energy
 As the apple falls to the ground, its height
decreases. Therefore, its PE decreases.
 The potential energy is not lost… it is
converted into kinetic energy as the
velocity of the apple increases.
 What happens to the mechanical
energy?
Kinetic energy:
It’s the energy an object has due to
motion
Example:
A moving bowling ball has energy that
causes the pins to fall .
This energy is called kinetic energy.
Kinetic Energy
The sky diver has kinetic energy
A ball kicked by a
football player has
a kinetic energy
Mass, Speed and Kinetic
Energy
 All moving objects have kinetic energy.
 Not all moving objects have the same
amount of kinetic energy.
 The amount of kinetic energy an object
has depends on the mass and the speed
of the object
Imagine those two rocks are rolling down the hillside
with the same speed.
Which one will have more kinetic energy?
Which one will cause more damage if they hit something
at the bottom?
The larger rock could cause more damage because it has
larger mass and has more kinetic energy than the
smaller rock
Kinetic energy also depends on speed .
The faster object has more speed and has
more kinetic energy
Transferring kinetic energy
Kinetic energy could be transferred from one object to another
when they collide .
•The bowling ball does not
touch all the pins but it can
knock them down with one
roll .
•The bowling ball transfer
kinetic energy to few pins.
•The pins will transfer this
kinetic energy to each other
and knock them down
•A transfer of kinetic energy
takes place when dominos
fall.
•When you tap the first
domino you give it a kinetic
energy
•Then the domino will fall into
the next one and the kinetic
energy will be transferred
from one domino to another
This skater has no
kinetic energy as
she’s standing at
the top of the hill
and not moving.
As the skater moves down , she is
moving faster and her kinetic
energy increases.
 Gravity pulls the skater
down the hill.
 If the skater was standing
at the bottom of the hill,
gravity wouldn’t start her
moving.
 When the skater is at the
top of the hill, she has a
form of energy called
Potential energy
Potential Energy
 It’s the energy that is stored because of an
object’s position.
 The Higher an object is lifted above earth,
the greater is it’s potential energy
Converting potential and
kinetic energy
When you throw
a ball upwards it
is moving the
fastest so it has
maximum kinetic
energy
As the ball
moves upward ,
it slows down
and stops for an
instant
As the ball
moves
downward it
speeds up and
the potential
energy is
transferred into
kinetic energy
Energy changes in falling
water
Is converted to
Water at the top of the dam has potential
energy.
When water falls
downwards the
potential energy
changes into kinetic
energy
The kinetic
energy in the
moving water
spins the
generators and
that’ll produce
electrical energy
KE and PE
 In many situations, there is a conversion
between potential and kinetic energy.
 The total amount of potential and kinetic
energy in a system is called the
mechanical energy
 Mechanical energy = PE + KE
Mechanical Energy
 The mechanical energy does not change
because the loss in potential energy is
simply transferred into kinetic energy.
 The energy in the system remains
constant!!
Swinging Along
 Think about the changes in energy when
you are on a swing…
 At what point do you have the most
potential energy?
 At what point do you have the most
kinetic energy?
 What happens to the mechanical
energy?
Radiant energy is also called electromagnetic energy. Radiant energy is
the movement of photons. All life on earth is dependent on radiant
energy from the sun. Examples of radiant energy include radio waves
(AM, FM, TV), microwaves, X-rays, and plant growth. Active solar energy
uses photovoltaic panels and light to turn radiant energy into chemical
energy.
Forms of
Energy
Electrical Energy
A form of energy that is
produced when electrons
move from one place to
another place
Electrical energy is the movement
of elections. Lightning and static
electricity are examples of
electrical energy that occur
naturally. Science hasn't found a
way to use natural forms of
electrical energy, like lightning.
Instead, we use different energy
sources to create electrical energy
by using generators and turbines.
Forms of
Energy
Nuclear energy is the energy
stored in the nucleus of an atom.
Nuclear energy is unusual in that
it can give off energy in the form
of light or heat, but it is the
change in the atom's makeup that
produces the energy. Submarines,
power plants, and smoke
detectors all use nuclear energy.
Nuclear power plants use
uranium, a radioactive element,
to create electricity.
Forms of
Energy
Mechanical energy is the movement
of machine parts. Mechanical
energy is also the total amount of
kinetic and potential energy in a
system. Wind-up toys, grandfather
clocks, and pogo sticks are examples
of mechanical energy. Wind power
uses mechanical energy to help
create electricity.
Potential energy + Kinetic energy =
Next
Potential energy + Kinetic energy = Mechanical energy
Forms of
Energy
Example of energy
changes in a
swing or
pendulum.
Changing Forms of Energy
 Energy is most noticeable as it
transforms from one type to another.
 What are some examples of transforming
electrical energy?
 A lightbulb
 A hair dryer
Magnetic energy is the attraction of
objects made of iron. Medical
equipment, compass, refrigerator
magnets are all examples of
magnetic energy. Any type of
energy source that uses a generator
in the process to make electricity
uses magnetic energy.
Forms of
Energy
Light Energy
A form of energy that
travels in waves and can
move through empty space
where there is no air.
Electrical energy is the movement
of electrons. Lightning and static
electricity are examples of
electrical energy that occur
naturally. Science hasn't found a
way to use natural forms of
electrical energy, like lightning.
Instead, we use different energy
sources to create electrical energy
by using generators and turbines.
Forms of
Energy
Thermal Energy
The energy of moving
particles in a substance;
also called heat energy
Thermal energy is the internal energy
in substances-the vibration and
movement of atoms and molecules
within substance. Thermal energy is
created in the movement of atoms.
Boiling water, burning wood, and
rubbing your hands together really
fast are all examples of heat energy.
Geothermal and passive solar are
sources of heat energy, but biomass (a
type of chemical energy) can be
burned to produce heat energy.
Forms of
Energy
Sound Energy
A form of energy produced
by vibrating objects.
Sound energy is the movement
molecules in the air that produces
vibrations. Alarms, music, speech,
ultrasound medical equipment all
use sound energy. VCR tapes
change sound energy into electrical
energy. The electrical energy
records the sound using magnetic
tape. Speakers read the magnetic
tape and change it back into sound.
Forms of
Energy
Chemical energy is the energy stored in
the bonds of atoms and molecules. This a
form of potential energy until the bonds
are broken. Fossil fuels and biomass store
chemical energy. Products that contain
chemical energy include: TNT, baking
soda, and a match. Biomass, petroleum,
natural gas, propane and coal are
examples of stored chemical energy.
Forms of
Energy
The Law of Conservation
of Energy
 The Law of Conservation of Energy
states that energy cannot be created or
destroyed.
 The big picture… the total energy in the
universe remains constant.
Energy in Your Body
 Even the energy converted in your body
follows the law of conservation of energy.
 Chemical potential energy is transferred
to kinetic energy that allows your body to
move!!
Calories…
 A Calorie (C) is a unit to measure
energy in foods.
 1 Calorie is equal to about 4,184
Joules.
 A person uses about:
 55 Calories while sleeping for 1 hour
 210 Calories while walking for 1 hour
 850 Calories while running for 1 hour
Changing forms of Energy
 An example of transforming chemical
energy is a car engine. Chemical
potential energy in gasoline is
transformed into kinetic energy of the car
as it moves!!
 But how? If I stop pumping while I’m
swinging, I stop!! So, where’s the
energy?
Conservation of Energy
 You need to remember friction…
 As you slow down on the swing, the
hooks and the chain rub against each
other and air pushes against the rider.
 Friction causes some of the mechanical
energy of the swing to change to thermal
energy and the temperature of the hooks
and chain heat up a little.
 The energy is still there, just in a different
form!!
Conservation of Energy
 Energy is transformed… not destroyed!!

Energy conversion

  • 3. Mechanical Energy The energy of movement. This energy includes both kinetic energy (motion) and potential (stored) energy
  • 4. Mechanical Energy  Mechanical energy is due to the position and motion of the object.  What happens to the mechanical energy of an apple as it falls from a tree?
  • 5. Mechanical Energy  As the apple falls to the ground, its height decreases. Therefore, its PE decreases.  The potential energy is not lost… it is converted into kinetic energy as the velocity of the apple increases.  What happens to the mechanical energy?
  • 6. Kinetic energy: It’s the energy an object has due to motion Example: A moving bowling ball has energy that causes the pins to fall . This energy is called kinetic energy. Kinetic Energy
  • 7. The sky diver has kinetic energy A ball kicked by a football player has a kinetic energy
  • 8. Mass, Speed and Kinetic Energy  All moving objects have kinetic energy.  Not all moving objects have the same amount of kinetic energy.  The amount of kinetic energy an object has depends on the mass and the speed of the object
  • 9. Imagine those two rocks are rolling down the hillside with the same speed. Which one will have more kinetic energy? Which one will cause more damage if they hit something at the bottom? The larger rock could cause more damage because it has larger mass and has more kinetic energy than the smaller rock
  • 10. Kinetic energy also depends on speed . The faster object has more speed and has more kinetic energy
  • 11. Transferring kinetic energy Kinetic energy could be transferred from one object to another when they collide . •The bowling ball does not touch all the pins but it can knock them down with one roll . •The bowling ball transfer kinetic energy to few pins. •The pins will transfer this kinetic energy to each other and knock them down
  • 12. •A transfer of kinetic energy takes place when dominos fall. •When you tap the first domino you give it a kinetic energy •Then the domino will fall into the next one and the kinetic energy will be transferred from one domino to another
  • 13. This skater has no kinetic energy as she’s standing at the top of the hill and not moving. As the skater moves down , she is moving faster and her kinetic energy increases.
  • 14.  Gravity pulls the skater down the hill.  If the skater was standing at the bottom of the hill, gravity wouldn’t start her moving.  When the skater is at the top of the hill, she has a form of energy called Potential energy
  • 15. Potential Energy  It’s the energy that is stored because of an object’s position.  The Higher an object is lifted above earth, the greater is it’s potential energy
  • 16.
  • 18. When you throw a ball upwards it is moving the fastest so it has maximum kinetic energy As the ball moves upward , it slows down and stops for an instant As the ball moves downward it speeds up and the potential energy is transferred into kinetic energy
  • 19.
  • 20.
  • 21. Energy changes in falling water Is converted to
  • 22. Water at the top of the dam has potential energy. When water falls downwards the potential energy changes into kinetic energy The kinetic energy in the moving water spins the generators and that’ll produce electrical energy
  • 23. KE and PE  In many situations, there is a conversion between potential and kinetic energy.  The total amount of potential and kinetic energy in a system is called the mechanical energy  Mechanical energy = PE + KE
  • 24. Mechanical Energy  The mechanical energy does not change because the loss in potential energy is simply transferred into kinetic energy.  The energy in the system remains constant!!
  • 25. Swinging Along  Think about the changes in energy when you are on a swing…  At what point do you have the most potential energy?  At what point do you have the most kinetic energy?  What happens to the mechanical energy?
  • 26. Radiant energy is also called electromagnetic energy. Radiant energy is the movement of photons. All life on earth is dependent on radiant energy from the sun. Examples of radiant energy include radio waves (AM, FM, TV), microwaves, X-rays, and plant growth. Active solar energy uses photovoltaic panels and light to turn radiant energy into chemical energy. Forms of Energy
  • 27. Electrical Energy A form of energy that is produced when electrons move from one place to another place
  • 28. Electrical energy is the movement of elections. Lightning and static electricity are examples of electrical energy that occur naturally. Science hasn't found a way to use natural forms of electrical energy, like lightning. Instead, we use different energy sources to create electrical energy by using generators and turbines. Forms of Energy
  • 29. Nuclear energy is the energy stored in the nucleus of an atom. Nuclear energy is unusual in that it can give off energy in the form of light or heat, but it is the change in the atom's makeup that produces the energy. Submarines, power plants, and smoke detectors all use nuclear energy. Nuclear power plants use uranium, a radioactive element, to create electricity. Forms of Energy
  • 30. Mechanical energy is the movement of machine parts. Mechanical energy is also the total amount of kinetic and potential energy in a system. Wind-up toys, grandfather clocks, and pogo sticks are examples of mechanical energy. Wind power uses mechanical energy to help create electricity. Potential energy + Kinetic energy = Next
  • 31. Potential energy + Kinetic energy = Mechanical energy Forms of Energy Example of energy changes in a swing or pendulum.
  • 32. Changing Forms of Energy  Energy is most noticeable as it transforms from one type to another.  What are some examples of transforming electrical energy?  A lightbulb  A hair dryer
  • 33. Magnetic energy is the attraction of objects made of iron. Medical equipment, compass, refrigerator magnets are all examples of magnetic energy. Any type of energy source that uses a generator in the process to make electricity uses magnetic energy. Forms of Energy
  • 34. Light Energy A form of energy that travels in waves and can move through empty space where there is no air.
  • 35. Electrical energy is the movement of electrons. Lightning and static electricity are examples of electrical energy that occur naturally. Science hasn't found a way to use natural forms of electrical energy, like lightning. Instead, we use different energy sources to create electrical energy by using generators and turbines. Forms of Energy
  • 36. Thermal Energy The energy of moving particles in a substance; also called heat energy
  • 37. Thermal energy is the internal energy in substances-the vibration and movement of atoms and molecules within substance. Thermal energy is created in the movement of atoms. Boiling water, burning wood, and rubbing your hands together really fast are all examples of heat energy. Geothermal and passive solar are sources of heat energy, but biomass (a type of chemical energy) can be burned to produce heat energy. Forms of Energy
  • 38. Sound Energy A form of energy produced by vibrating objects.
  • 39. Sound energy is the movement molecules in the air that produces vibrations. Alarms, music, speech, ultrasound medical equipment all use sound energy. VCR tapes change sound energy into electrical energy. The electrical energy records the sound using magnetic tape. Speakers read the magnetic tape and change it back into sound. Forms of Energy
  • 40. Chemical energy is the energy stored in the bonds of atoms and molecules. This a form of potential energy until the bonds are broken. Fossil fuels and biomass store chemical energy. Products that contain chemical energy include: TNT, baking soda, and a match. Biomass, petroleum, natural gas, propane and coal are examples of stored chemical energy. Forms of Energy
  • 41. The Law of Conservation of Energy  The Law of Conservation of Energy states that energy cannot be created or destroyed.  The big picture… the total energy in the universe remains constant.
  • 42. Energy in Your Body  Even the energy converted in your body follows the law of conservation of energy.  Chemical potential energy is transferred to kinetic energy that allows your body to move!!
  • 43. Calories…  A Calorie (C) is a unit to measure energy in foods.  1 Calorie is equal to about 4,184 Joules.  A person uses about:  55 Calories while sleeping for 1 hour  210 Calories while walking for 1 hour  850 Calories while running for 1 hour
  • 44. Changing forms of Energy  An example of transforming chemical energy is a car engine. Chemical potential energy in gasoline is transformed into kinetic energy of the car as it moves!!
  • 45.  But how? If I stop pumping while I’m swinging, I stop!! So, where’s the energy?
  • 46. Conservation of Energy  You need to remember friction…  As you slow down on the swing, the hooks and the chain rub against each other and air pushes against the rider.
  • 47.  Friction causes some of the mechanical energy of the swing to change to thermal energy and the temperature of the hooks and chain heat up a little.  The energy is still there, just in a different form!!
  • 48. Conservation of Energy  Energy is transformed… not destroyed!!
