  2. 2. Roman Marriages <ul><li>Marriages-based on social status of a person-not their love. </li></ul><ul><li>The father choose the husband. </li></ul><ul><li>Young women “unloved” by parents until they were married. </li></ul><ul><li>Divorce was unknown. </li></ul>

Roman Marriages <ul><li>Young brides were married off by the age of 14. </li></ul><ul><li>The future husband and wife would hold hands in public – a sign that the woman agreed to be wedded to the man. </li></ul><ul><li>The woman chants “Quando tu Gaius, ego Gaia.” (When-and-where-you are Gaius, I then-and-there-am Gaia). </li></ul>

Once they reach the House <ul><li>Bride will say “Quando tu Gaius, ego Gaia ” once again. </li></ul><ul><li>Cover doorpost with wool—future works she is to do as the mistress. </li></ul><ul><li>Put oil and fat on the door. </li></ul><ul><li>Bride carried by the groom to the inside of the house to avoid her slipping the first time she enters the house (a bad omen). </li></ul>
