1. 1. For Lake water Treatment BY Kiran.P.Kulkarni Ulsoor Lake Presentation
 2. 2. What is EM?

EM is the abbreviation of ‘Effective Microorganisms’, originated by Dr. Prof. Teruo Higa at the Ryukyus University, Okinawa, Japan in the early 1980s.

It is a consortium of selected microbes like Lactic Acid bacteria, Photosynthetic bacteria and yeast.

All these are mutually compatible with one another and co-exist in liquid culture below a pH of 3.5.

The microorganisms are not Genetically engineered, exotic or imported. They are produced in our factory in Kolkata.

All microbes are facultative. They exhibit both aerobic and anaerobic characteristics.

They work in a wide range of temperatures, salinity and pH values.

Maple EM.1 is certified as an Organic input by ECOCERT, France and is now being used in over 126 Countries worldwide.

 3. 3. BENEFITS

Increase the efficiency and stability of Aerobic and Anaerobic Digesters

Reduce sludge build up.

Reduction in COD and BOD

Degrade oil ,grease

Decrease T-N, T-P, TSS and stabilize pH

Prevents proliferation of pathogens

Recycles wastewater

Eliminates foul odor

Easily converts organic wastes into organic fertilizer.

 4. 4. Application areas of EM.1

Municipality waste water

Industrial waste water

Agriculture waste water

Environment

Treating of Lakes drains and rivers

 10. 16. AEM Requirement for Treatment

Considering 100 crore lts of Lake water 30,000 lts of AEM is required.

On 28-11-2009 Added 1500 lts.

On 21-12-2009 Added 3000 lts

On 09-02-2010 Added 3000 lts

Still to add Approximately 22,500 lts

 16. 22. Joint Inspection of Lake and surrounding area was done along with BBMP/ GAT & Bale com Biotech officials/Enviornmentalist/Local residents on 25-02-2010

Point observed:-Main Lake not any more stinking & Floating sludge not seen.

But the Drains surrounding the lake stinks leading to the foul odor in the Area.

The In let Zone & the out let Zone (Guru Dwara End) still stinks.

Water quality at MEG Main Gate and Temple end is very Bad with Floating sludge.

 17. 23. Actions to be taken

Main Lake & inlet zone water sample is collected & sent for Testing

Bar screening & sludge removal system to be installed next to BBMP filtration Plant

EM Dosing system to be installed after treating the entire drain with EM once

 18. 24. Opinion of the Local residents

----- no. of residents were interviewed by volunteers 0f Art of Living Foundation

Many people walking in the BBMP garden have expressed that during the last three months the stinking smell and the floating sludge has reduced but the drains are still stinking
