    19. 19. 19 • If we go back a little in history we shall remember that competitive advantage was marked by the ownership of capital and assets such as natural resources, estates, etc., but today we are experiencing a fourth great revolution, that of knowledge.. Governance, society of the knowledge & SociotechnicalGovernance, society of the knowledge & Sociotechnical Systems:Systems: challenges and reflectionschallenges and reflections
    20. 20. 20 •The first revolution: the industrial age. From 1750 until the mid 1960s. Marked by the evolution of the process. •A second moment took place in the 70s, marked by the expansion of the Japanese industry. The world was overtaken by a revolution in processes. Governance, society of the knowledge & SociotechnicalGovernance, society of the knowledge & Sociotechnical Systems:Systems: challenges and reflectionschallenges and reflections
    21. 21. 21 • In the 80s and 90s we have the third moment, marked by a technological revolution in the West and lead by the Americans. Governance, society of the knowledge & SociotechnicalGovernance, society of the knowledge & Sociotechnical Systems:Systems: challenges and reflectionschallenges and reflections • Fourth revolution, the “Age of Knowledge”: Organizations are focusing "people" as a great competitive differential.
    22. 22. 22 • What about the social-technical question involving IT and people in this Age? Governance, society of the knowledge & SociotechnicalGovernance, society of the knowledge & Sociotechnical Systems:Systems: challenges and reflectionschallenges and reflections It is the treatment of the organization as a living being, through a systemic view, that will enable the emergence of phenomena which shall enable the whole to be more than the sum of the parts of such being/organism!.
    23. 23. 23 • How to theorize such context? Governance, society of the knowledge & SociotechnicalGovernance, society of the knowledge & Sociotechnical Systems:Systems: challenges and reflectionschallenges and reflections “a deep understanding that there is always a simple explanation to any seemingly intractable problem.” (TOC - concept of Inherent Simplicity)
    24. 24. 24 • From the last questions, it follows several others questions related with the Age of Knowledge: 1. How to deal with the social-technical questions in such Age? 2. Is the present economic crisis the “last straw” in order for us to finally, develops such sense of unity and perception of the whole?  3. Does the solution for this knowledge information society go, necessarily, through the social-technical IT questions? 4. And The Future ? How to elaborate/build a new way of development, which comprises the social, economical, cultural and environmental spheres, and that leads us to a new model of perception and knowledge of the world – a perfect social-technical system? 5. IF such new system had already been developed, AND ACCEPTED, would the present financial crisis have occurred? 6. ... Governance, society of the knowledge & SociotechnicalGovernance, society of the knowledge & Sociotechnical Systems:Systems: challenges and reflectionschallenges and reflections
    25. 25. 25 For countries in development, such as Brazil, to transform their condition, it is necessary, NOW, to advance their R&D and local Collaborative Ecosystem research efforts (RDCE)... Governance, society of the knowledge & SociotechnicalGovernance, society of the knowledge & Sociotechnical Systems:Systems: challenges and reflectionschallenges and reflections •And in the future ? RDCE must consider the principle of the Systemic View and, it may be accomplished by the integration among one of these interdependent subjects: ecology, biology, communication, organizations, economy, education, communities, technology, culture and the human being (social-technical systems).
    26. 26. 26 The Governance imposing normative goals of sustainability upon existing sociotechnical systems, implies connecting and synchronizing changes among these actors, institutions and artifacts at many different points in the system. Governance, society of the knowledge & SociotechnicalGovernance, society of the knowledge & Sociotechnical Systems:Systems: challenges and reflectionschallenges and reflections
    27. 27. 27 Governance, society of the knowledge & SociotechnicalGovernance, society of the knowledge & Sociotechnical Systems:Systems: challenges and reflectionschallenges and reflections • IF such new system (*) had already been developed, AND ACCEPTED, would the present financial crisis have occurred? * that which comprises the social, economical, cultural and environmental spheres, and that leads us to a new model of perception and knowledge of the world
    28. 28. 28 Governance, society of the knowledge & SociotechnicalGovernance, society of the knowledge & Sociotechnical Systems:Systems: challenges and reflectionschallenges and reflections • Today’s crisis is the result of a catastrophic failure, primarily in the financial system but also of our economic and political systems. •Even though the Sarbanes-OxleyAct of 2002 had been an important initiative of U.S. Government to regulate companies after the drop of financial institutions, it has not proved to be effective enough to avoid a financial crash in the world economy in 2008...
    29. 29. 29 Governance, society of the knowledge & SociotechnicalGovernance, society of the knowledge & Sociotechnical Systems:Systems: challenges and reflectionschallenges and reflections The challenge now is the systemic thinking (that which focuses on the performance of a system as a whole) - to design a society (regulator) - that goes beyond companies’ compliances - and actually measures and focuses on systemic risks, rather than on the individual parts of the system. And, at this point that governance could exercise its essential mean and to extend its role to the hole society. Contributing to define a new systematic way of manage business, society and why not the individuals?
    30. 30. 30 Governance, society of the knowledge & SociotechnicalGovernance, society of the knowledge & Sociotechnical Systems:Systems: challenges and reflectionschallenges and reflections By last but not least, “Challenges and Reflections”, tried to awake our feelings towards this new era of knowledge. Perspectives But, yet, news questions remain to be answered: Who or what will be driving innovations in this new era? Which is the impact of the sociotechnical system in such innovations process? About SOX, it seems that it has not been enough to avoid a financial crash in the world economy in 2008- Why?.
