  2. 2. General informationWheelchair basketball is basketball played by people inwheelchairs and is considered one of the major disabledsports practiced. The International WheelchairBasketball Federation (IWBF) is the governing body forthis sport. It is recognized by the InternationalParalympics Committee (IPC) as the sole competentauthority in wheelchair basketball world wide. FIBA hasrecognized IWBF under Article 53 of its GeneralStatutes.

IWBF has 82 National Organizations for WheelchairBasketball actively participating in wheelchair basketballthroughout the world with this number increasing each year.It is estimated that more than 100,000 people playwheelchair basketball from recreation to club play and aselite national team members. Wheelchair basketball isplayed by boys, girls, men and women.
  4. 4. Wheelchair basketball sees tremendous competition andinterest on the international level. Wheelchair basketball isincluded in the Paralympics Games that are held every fouryears for athletes with physical disabilities immediatelyfollowing the Olympics in the same city that hosts theSummer Olympics just two weeks after the closing of theSummer Games.

Wheelchair basketball in LatviaIn Latvia this kind of sport is young, only 6 years old.Although in Latvian cities there are a total of 6 WheelchairBasketball teams but people who want to enjoy this kind ofsport are lot more. Only the richest people with disabilitiescan engage in this sport. That’s because to get the trainingsites they need special transport and expensiveequipment.
