  • Inculcation, indoctrination, learning to survive? What does culture & climate mean to you?
  • So let’s go through the circles…geospatial – physical; traditions, myths, artifacts, symbolism – the spartan; behavioral patterns & processes – governance; espoused values & beliefs – missions, value statements; embedded values and beliefs – what we bring as a group/individual into the organization…
  • You should google this question….quite a lot of stuff out there about this very question…There are certainly criticisms now about the purpose of higher ed…is it to train you for a job? Is it to enhance civic engagement? What about for-profits vs. non-profits…What about this “real” world vs. the “ivory tower”….how does this fit in with the idea of shared governance? How does this idea affect the culture/climate of the institution?
  • Incivility vs. collegiality is a hot topic in higher education – I wanted us to read this chapter however so we can see the root of some of these issues and how there may be some embedded issues at work in our institutions.– who should go to college? Men, women, different races/ethnities, the wealthy?- faculty vs. students – what do they want and what do we want to give? Scholarship vs. wealth, agriculture vs. philosophyFaculty vs. administration – who is in charge? Bureaucracy, moving up the chain of command vs. teachingBack to what is college for?
