  23. 23. Social engagement A brief review
  24. 24. Emergency preparation • All these maps are live in near-real-time • All available on ArcGIS Online w subscription • Took a lunch hour to prepare map and a late afternoon to create video • Animations really easy to use • Earth maps beautiful but node.js • Can add other infrastructure data authoritative data + accessible maps = effective disaster response help
  25. 25. Situational awareness • Lots of information readily available • Easy to put together and to present • Engage communities & businesses • Help with resources before/during/after • Add infrastructure & other info layers • Transmission, distribution, communications etc. facilities
  26. 26. Synopsis • Hurricane Harvey: - social media + accessible mapping = helpful social interaction • Hurricane Irma: - authoritative data + accessible maps = effective disaster response help • Outcome - situational awareness for the better good
  27. 27. Wrap-up • This year’s hurricanes in the Caribbean highlighted the challenges and opportunities in community engagement for disaster response • Texas coastal areas juxtapose transportation and distribution network with populated and flood-prone areas • New public data and web situational awareness helps collect, interpret and display crucial and timely data • Broadcast on social and traditional media, they help engage general public, government agencies and infrastructure management companies • (bonus next) historical records give a glimpse into the possibility of future such challenges
  28. 28. Geo-history (optional)
  29. 29. Paleotempestology • Previous slide showed past tracks • Severe weather is no news in the Caribbean or the Gulf of Mexico • LSU thesis puts it in a geological / historical context • Hurricanes cause significant erosion & transport of sediments • Geologic record preserves these for historic times (before they’re eroded) • Added some historic events of the region to give it context • Intriguing statistical calculation on 250 years periodicity of events • Care must be taken however in predicting anything Implications for climate change and hurricane frequency?
