Add so me spice to your reading and writing classes Presented by Aysegul Liman Kaban Do your students find reading and writing activities boring? Have you ever wished practicing reading and writing could be more fun for you and your students? If you say yes, this session is for you. As we already know it is not easy to motivate the students who are easily distracted and only think about surfing on the Internet. In this workshop we will look at ways to use technology to make your classes more fun.

  11. 11. Baby tossing  Woman, 93, is world's oldest yoga teacher  Strange but True  Identical Twins' Genes Are Not Identical 
  12. 12.  Orange News (formerly known as Ananova), as well as having some great quirky news stories, which are great for class, also has a "News in pictures" section with some fun things in its quirky photo gallery. http://web.orange.co.uk/article/quirkies/Woman_tried_to_post_live_puppy At Yahoo, you have a similar source of bizarre news stories, in its "Oddly Enough" section. I find that they are particularly good for dictogloss, and both the stories and images work great on the interactive whiteboard. http://uk.news.yahoo.com/oddlyenough.html   On the IWB, it's so easy to import things, for a start, and separating pictures from captions gives you and easy-to-create drag-and-drop, matching exercise. http://www.iwb.org.uk/
  13. 13. http://dreamdoze.com/  This task is based around a website called DreamDoze, where people share their dreams and help each other understand them.  The site enables your students to write down their dreams, share them with other people and get their interpretation of their dream.  They can also read about other people's dreams and help them to understand them. 
  14. 14. This activity will show you how to get simple quick writing practice and how to give and receive feedback and criticism of your written work.  The activity is based around a site called Five Card Stories and will help you to create a story based on 5 images.  http://5card.cogdogblog.com/ 
  15. 15. First you are going to read some very short stories based on images.  Look at the five images that go with it, read each story and then vote how good you think the story is.  If you think the story is really good, give it 10 stars. If you think it's really bad, give it just one.  http://5card.cogdogblog.com/show.php ?suit=5card 
  16. 16.  http://5card.cogdogblog.com/photos.p hp?tag=5cardflickr
  17. 17.  Students often expect their teacher to correct their written errors, but students can also learn a lot from looking for and correcting errors in written work.
  18. 18.  http://www.spellchecker.net/spellcheck/
  19. 19.  http://ed.grammarly.com/editor/view?f=1
  20. 20. http://issuu.com/  One of the great things about being able to speak and understand English is that it gives you access to a huge amount of varied reading materials in all kinds of different forms and on all kinds of topics. 
  21. 21. Why Penzu?  You do not need to carry papers any more!  It is green!  No limitation of location! 
  22. 22. I think penzu and edmodo are awesome because I can communicate to my classmates with my Blackberry. Gizem We can look at our feedback easily on penzu classroom. So it helps us to improve our paragraph skills. Oğuzcan Penzu classroom is my favourite website for school. You can write when and what you want, even negative things. Gamze
  23. 23. http://transl8it.com/ It is simple to use.  Just type in your SMS, text, emoticon, smiley, slang or chat room lingo and let transL8it!  Convert it to plain english -- OR -- type in your phrase in english and convert it to SMS TXT lingo slang! 
  24. 24. I hav eaten d plums Dat wer n d icebox & whch U wer problE saving 4 breakfast 4giv me dey wer delicious so swEt & so cold
  25. 25. I have eaten the plums that were in the icebox and which you were probably saving for breakfast Forgive me they were delicious so sweet and so cold
  26. 26. 12. Use of dictionaries http://www.onelook.com/reversedictionary.shtml  http://daily-englishactivities.blogspot.com/2009/06/findwords-that-express-your-thoughts.html 
  27. 27. Improve critical skills  Students read more to be successful  They have a motivation to read and speak.  After debates they can write reflection letters. 
  28. 28.         Firstly Ss look at the photographs, select at least 8-10 of them, and decide how the people are related (relatives? work? living in the same block? friends? married?) Ss decide what "the story" is going to be (someone gets/doesn't get the job, win lottery, consequences, etc., etc…) Ss make brief "character notes" on the people selected (name, age, background, job , character…) Ss decide what written texts there could be that would "tell" the story (job applications, emails, memos, reports, post-it notes…) Ss agree on and make any alterations necessary for the story to be coherent Ss then write the texts (in pairs, not individually), and post them on a blog Ss write comments on the blog (both on the content, and to provide feedback on the project) T (=teacher) provides feedback, correction, etc.
  29. 29. Playing with words, creating interactive writing games. You can choose the plot, the setting, the character…  After you finish, you can print and e-mail your writings : http://writingfix.com 
  30. 30.  Firstly, you need to find at least three compare and contrast essays (you can change the essay type of course:)).  Secondly, paste them to the word and organize it like the sample below. Add outer border to the pieces.  Thirdly, print the essays and cut them into pieces and mix.  Divide the class into groups and call the first group and set the timer.  Each group need to form one essay correctly of course in the fastest time.  Don't let the other groups look at the cards before the game started. (Because they may memorize the organization of the essays.)  Finally, choose the fastest group.
