The Iroquois lived in long houses that could hold multiple families and had a matriarchal society where women owned property and chose leaders. The League of the Iroquois was formed between five nations - Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca - to promote peace through a council with representatives from each nation having one vote on decisions. Their Great Law of Peace constitution guaranteed rights similar to those in the U.S. Constitution.
