The era of power hungry desktop computers is quickly drawing to an end. Users are optimizing their devices for exactly what they need to do.

  • I'm a little confused. What is time horizon for your presentation (the title seems to indicate that it's now)?

Surface RT, which is in market today, runs on an ARM chipset - it is also in a tablet form factor (with a detachable keyboard), yet you equate it to a PC. Awareness for Surface is low as it's a new product (it shipped in October and initially only to Microsoft stores, versus the iPad, which has been in market for over 3 years). This article seems to indicate that awareness (and preference) for Surface is picking up: http://bgr.com/2013/01/10/iphone-surface-teen-survey-287400/.

Perhaps you meant to say that Windows is dead. Per slide 11, computers (85% of which run Windows) are still quite high on the list of desired gifts for Christmas. Something else worth noting: 85% of internet traffic still comes from the desktop: http://gs.statcounter.com/#mobile_vs_desktop-ww-monthly-201112-201212.

  5. 5. Netbooks triggered the endof the Wintel Era • Netbooks were a bit ahead of their time, because people were still thinking “desktops moving downstream” now we are thinking “smartphones moving upstream” (tablets) • Netbooks were priced in the $299 range, which forever killed PC makers’ ability to charge more than $1,000 for laptops or PCs. • Netbooks still had to use PC software (hundreds of titles); but tablets and Chromebooks use apps (hundreds of thousands)-5- Augustine Fou

  13. 13. Why Surface Will Fail • It is more expensive than other Android based tablets • The app ecosystem is practically non-existent • It uses a desktop OS, force fitted with a new “tile interface” to be more tablet-like, but still burdened with overhead NPD Group – “Windows 8 gets off to a slow start” CNet – “Windows 8 launches... and PC sales drop 21 percent.”- 13 - Augustine Fou
