4. 5. Why do I Need it In the Eyes of the Enforcing Authorities Ignorance is no defence!!! The law states that all workers have a right to work in places where risks to their Health and Safety are properly controlled. On January 16th 2009 a new act came into force called the Health and Safety (Offences) Act 2008 which made imprisonment an option for MOST health and safety offences. It imposed new fines thresholds too, which now makes breaking the law COSTLY. Health and Safety incidents and accidents are very costly. According to the Association of British Insurers an accident or incident costing circa £600.00 (The average cost suggested by the ABI) means that an organisation with a net profit margin of 15% would need to increase turnover by £4,000 to make up for that accident incident.
 5. 6.

How do I use it?

The Guidance notes in the Health and Safety Companion are in PDF format, so you will need a PDF reader to view the information.
