  • The Information Age In the Information Age, communication services are gradually migrating from supporting pure voice to multimedia with data and visual capabilities. We have begun to realise the important role that wireless data communications plays in our professional and and personal lives. Wireless data is a reality. Operators today are already building familiarity and excitement about data services. Many applications and content that users want now, can be transmitted over existing 2G networks with low speed data capabilities. The indicators are evident by looking at industry’s movement towards broad-based mainstream markets through ground-breaking solutions such as interactive paging, SMS and connected personal information managers, along with wireless e-mail solutions. We are in the middle of the Information Age; information is available everywhere, anytime, at ever-increasing speeds. We need to understand, integrate and use all this information to our advantage. Problems can arise if we become overloaded with the amount of information we accumulate. No matter how fast the transmission rates are, we can still only process about 300 words per minute in written form. What has become more important in this Information Age, is that we know how and where to find the information we need, when we need it, rather that to remember the information itself.
