Hi, I want to show you something today that I hope will get you excited about science and how much fun it can be.Hands up anyone who has heard of the Bloodhound project based here in Bristol? It is a project to develop a car to not just break, but shatter the land speed record as we shall see shortly. It is also a project to promote science in schools and colleges by showing some of the amazing things that have to be done by scientists and engineers to overcome many complex challenging problems.
It all started over 100 years ago with electric and then steam powered cars.
So now to the land speed recordThis is Bloodhound SSC - itis a car. ? What do you think SSC stands for? Super sonic carIt is designed to break the world land speed record - be the fastest car on the planet.Design nearly finalized, lower chassis being built in February 2011 First runs start of next year. Aim, go at 1000 miles an hour by 2012.F1 go 220 or so. Bloodhound SSC aiming for 1000.
Breaking the sound barrier means travelling faster than sound can go in air. This means you compress the air which gives the sonic boom.
You have all swung round a top or something similar on the end of a string and felt that the faster you swing it the more pull there is on the string. Well these wheels are spinning so fast that they try to burst apart with a force 50 thousand times that of the force of gravity keeping you on the groupd!
So lets see how the jest and rockets helped the record attempt
Ask for suggestions – how do airplanes slow down before landing?Parachute increases the resistance on the car from air in the same way as air brakes. Why are parachutes only good for slow speeds? Why disc brakes even slower?
Bloodhound uses all 3 methods to stop.

ENGINEERING ADVENTURE www.BLOODHOUNDSSC.comWhat are we going to do today?1. I’m going to tell you a story and as we gothroughAs the Benefits SIG• Identify– Component Projects and their objectives– Benefits– Who is going to deliver them• How can we measure success? – andwhen?
ENGINEERING ADVENTURE www.BLOODHOUNDSSC.comThe World Land Speed Record• The FIA World Record for the fastest car• Unlimited design – but must have 4 or morewheels• Requires very advanced engineers• Involves 2-300 companies in the supply chain• Held by UK for 65 out of 109 years – deep in UKCulture• Thrust teams have held the World Land SpeedRecord for 26 years continuously

ENGINEERING ADVENTURE www.BLOODHOUNDSSC.comStrange things happen at high speeds• Air does not behave normally• Computer models help keep the car on the ground
ENGINEERING ADVENTURE www.BLOODHOUNDSSC.comStrange things happen at high speeds• Steering becomes a problem!• Diameter 900mm• Width 150mm• Profile V• Weight 100-150kg• 50,000g force at the rim at full speed• Special wheels are needed
ENGINEERING ADVENTURE www.BLOODHOUNDSSC.comHere comes a Project (or two)!• Let’s design a car that will safely achievethe speed we need• Find Designers - recruit Universities• New methodologies for design – old wayswon’t work• By the way – we have no money – Projectneeded to raise the cash• Find Sponsors• Involve the Public?
ENGINEERING ADVENTURE www.BLOODHOUNDSSC.comSpot the difference• Typhoon operates at high level• Bloodhound will stay on the ground• Need to have the engine modified– Can we persuade Rolls Royce to do this for us?• Another Project?
ENGINEERING ADVENTURE www.BLOODHOUNDSSC.comAnother Project!• Bloodhound can have the engine – withconditions….• An EDUCATION Programme!• Recruit volunteers, create assets, plancampaign, find schools, fit into nationalcurriculum• Objective – get more young peopleinspired by the Engineering Adventure, career development, help UK PLC

ENGINEERING ADVENTURE www.BLOODHOUNDSSC.comHow do you slow down very fast things?• Air brakes– High speed• Parachutes– Slow speed• Mechanical brake– Even slower
ENGINEERING ADVENTURE www.BLOODHOUNDSSC.comHow does Bloodhound stop?• Air Brakes slow down to 200mph• Parachutes deployed at 600mph if airbrakes fail• Disc Brakes to stop
