International Rescue Committee 2013

Editor's Notes

  1. IRC was founded in 1933, at the suggestion of Albert Einstein , to assist in rescuing persecuted peoples from the Nazi regime in Germany. Since then, IRC ’s mandate has expanded to assisting persecuted peoples, families displaced by civil war, conflict and communities affected by natural disaster. For nearly 80 years, the IRC has been there during the world’s gravest emergencies: from World War II
  2. Hungary and Vietnam
  3. through ethnic cleansing in Bosnia and the genocide in Rwanda
  4. to the earthquake in Haiti and the tsunami in Southeast Asia .
  5. EMERGENCY RELIEF & LONG-TERM DEVELOPMENT
  6. Response: “Survival” In the face of disaster, IRC is on the ground within 72 hours. We provide immediate relief to save lives, providing access to basic survival materials and services, - AND – because we want our interventions to best facilitate future recovery, IRC ’s emergency team implements assessments to work in tandem with local partners and resources. (provide example, i.e. Syria IRC assessment findings of women & girl specific intervention needs?)
  7. Recovery: “Opportunity” IRC builds upon existing infrastructure in a country and provides the “scaffolding” to ensure that basic services – like healthcare and education – continue, meanwhile helping communities to “build back better.”
  8. Rebuild: “Sustainability” On average, the IRC will spend 10 – 12 years in any given country, working at the grassroots and national level to ensure that communities, civil society, and government can get back on their feet for durable change.
  9. Reach - Using the map that we already have we will hone in one several sections of the globe to show how we have Responded, have helped communities to Recover, and have helped them to Rebuild/Resettle. Today, we do execute the 3rs in areas like: Respond: (zoom in on Haiti on map to photo of programs)   Haiti: sanitation   Recovery: Pakistan – Community Lady Health workers   Rebuild: Burma – farmer seed stock

  20. Through IRC ’s unique role helping people displaced by conflict and natural disaster internationally as well as domestically, we are intimately aware of our interconnectedness of the world and globalization – from how we as Americans experience climate change, to the introduction of international cuisine to the American palate.   Not unlike Chipotle deftly mastering the appeal of Mexican and South East Asian cuisine for American diners, through our work with refugee and immigrant communities in the United States, we have seen how they bring knowledge and skill sets from their home countries, to then strengthen their new communities here in the United States. Our Refugee Farming New Roots program is a perfect example.  As you can imagine, most refugees come to this country with practically nothing, and so their first homes are often in low income communities – often food deserts.  These refugees (Somali, Burmese, Iraqi etc…) trade one disaster (civil war, drought, earthquake) for the public health disaster our country is facing – in Diabetes, Heart Disease and Obesity.  Six years ago, in San Diego, a group of Somali Bantu refugee women came to us and said while they thanked us for all of our ESL, job placement, housing etc… services, that if we found them a piece of land to till, that they could start to take care of their own needs: Healthy food Family intergenerational activities Community green space Livelihoods

  28. Closing Slide: (This is the final image/slide)   Please use the slide called New_Roots_FINALIMAGE . (it ’ s a photo of woman wearing bright blue with her arms open in a field). Text somewhere on this slide should read or appear – “ The Food of is local, the story is Global ” Please include the IRC logo here too   (Danielle ’ s closing narrative: As our New Roots program grows in cities across the United States, we are looking to broaden our New Roots marketing campaign reach to new audiences and to engage new partners.   We have long admired Chipotle ’ s ethos and business model, and know how proud over 100 of our refugee clients are to call themselves Chipotle employees.   We are enthusiastic about potential synergy between IRC ’ s New Roots work and Chipotle ’ s mission)   END.
