  2. 2. CataractWhat is cataract ? Cataract is the clouding of the lens in your eye whichcauses blurred or hazy vision. Ageing is the most common causefor cataracts. Other reasons may be eye injuries, eye diseases orlong term medications like steroids. How a cataract eye affects your vision ? Light from an object is broken up as it passes through acloudy, discolored lens, causing the image to be blurred and dull.Hence, the quality of vision decreases. What are the symptoms of cataract ? An early sign is increasing glare from strong sunlight orbright lights at night. This may cause difficulty in driving at nightand you might notice halos around car headlights.
  3. 3. Blurring of vision is the next most common problem. This leads tofrequent changes in prescription glasses.Colors that are normally bright may appear faded and washed out.Difficulty in reading is also a common problem. What can you avoid cataract ?Reducing the amount of ultraviolet light exposure by wearingsunglasses may reduce your risk of developing a cataract, but oncedeveloped, surgery is the only optionWhat are the opitions to treat cataract ?Surgery is the only treatment after diagnosis and confirmation ofcataract by an ophthalmologist.
  4. 4. Diagnosis involves a thorough slit lamp microscope examination, eye pressure check and retina evaluation to rule out any otherproblem with the eyes. How much time does the surgery take ? Cataract surgery is a day-care surgery i.e. It does notrequire admission in the hospital. The surgery takes approximately10-25 minutes. Patient can leave the hospital 2-3 hours aftersurgery. What are the different techniques of cataract surgery ? This involves the removal of the clouded, opacified lensand its replacement with a synthetic, clear intra-ocular lens (IOL).Ophthalmology is now advanced enough to remove this cloudedlens through extremely small micro-incisions. Small incisionsurgeries have helped in faster visual rehabilitation the patient cansoon resume his daily activities.
  5. 5. Cataract surgery can be performed by the followingtechniques:• ECCE (Extra-capsular cataract extraction): This involvesremoval of the cataract & placing of the IOL through alarge incision of about 10 mm. The incision is closed by takingsutures. This method is now almost obsolete.• SICS (Small Incision Cataract Surgery): This is a bettertechnique than ECCE with the incision being about 5-6mm.Both foldable & non-foldable IOL may be placed. Thereare no stitches required to close the incision. Phaco / laser (phaco-emulsification technique) This is the best technique available for cataractextraction. It involves the removal of the clouded, opacified lensand its replacement with a synthetic, clear foldable intra-ocularlens through a very small micro-incision of 2.8 mm.
  6. 6. Visual rehabilitation is much faster in this surgery; the outcomesare much better. What are the types of Intra Ocular Lenses ( IOLs ) • MONOFOCAL LENSES, also known as standard lenses, provide clear vision but only at one fixed focal point, usually at adistance. If you are fitted with a monofocal lens, you will mostlikely need glasses to see up close.• MULTIFOCAL LENSES, have special features that correctyour near, intermediate, and distance vision in the same lens.Multifocal IOLs provide your best chance at being free of glassesfor the majority of activities.• ACCOMODATIVE LENSES, also known as variable focuslenses, are designed to move in response to your eye muscles toadjust for near, immediate and far vision.
  7. 7. Those who are able to retrain their eye muscles to move the lenshave experienced relief from presbyopia as well as cataracts. However, accommodative lenses actually have a fixed focal point, which makes them a type of monofocal lens.• TORIC LENSES are designed for people with astigmatism, reducing or virtually eliminating the need for glasses for distancevision following surgery in people with astigmatism.Corneal Transplantation The CORNEA is the transparent tissue at the front of theeye and the only place in the body where tissue is clear. Thetransparency and shape of the cornea is vital for good vision andany alteration in this can result in poor vision or blindness.
  8. 8. Several conditions that affect the transparency of the corneainclude Keratoconus, Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy, acondition where the cells of the innermost layer (endothelium)become deficient and unable to remove fluid from the cornea. Thecornea becomes swollen and loses clarity. Trauma, prior eyesurgery and Herpes simplex viral disease can also affect cornealclarity. Corneal transplantation involves removal of a portion of (partial orlamellar keratoplasty) or complete (full thickness or penetratingkeratoplasty) removal of a cloudy or deformed cornea andreplacement with a transplant donated by another human beingat death.Types of transplantation performed in our hospitals are:
  9. 9. • Penetrating Keratoplasty• Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty ( DALK )• Descemet’s Stripping Endothelial keratoplasty (DSEK)• Therapeutic keratoplasty Laser vision correction – a new dimension Laser vision correction - a highly successful method ofcorrecting myopia and hypermetropia, works by changing theshape of the cornea. More than 30 million worldwide haveundergone laser vision correction to free themselves from glassesand contact lenses.
  10. 10. The following procedures are performed: Lasik For a range of LASIK eye surgery information and FAQsread the section on LASIK. What is lasik ? Used to correct refractive errors, LASIK eye surgery is atreatment that reshapes the cornea in order to produce clearvision. The LASIK refractive eye surgery procedure can treatmyopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), andastigmatism, and reduce patients’ dependency on contact lensesand glasses. Because refractive errors impede the focusing abilityof the eye, patients who suffer from these conditions experienceblurred vision. LASIK eye surgery provides these individuals with aneffective treatment option, where a predetermined amount ofcorneal tissue is removed.
  11. 11. This reshaping of the cornea improves the eye’s focusing powerand enhances patients’ visual acuity. What is custom lasik ? In the past, LASIK eye surgery was based simply on yourprescription: whether you were nearsighted, farsighted, orastigmatic, and your degrees of each. However, excellent vision isalso dependent on higher-order aberrations — more complicatedand personalized visual imperfections that affect the crispness andclarity of your vision. New custom LASIK technology is able todiagnose and treat these visual imperfections like never before.Custom LASIK eye surgery has the same mechanical componentsof traditional LASIK, but is fully personalized and guided by adetailed WAVEFRONT ANALYSIS map of your eyes.
  12. 12. Epi – lasik If you have been told that you are not a candidatefor LASIK, you may be able to benefit from another type of lasereye surgery called Epi-LASIK. The information on this page can helpyou learn about the steps, benefits, and complications associatedwith this procedureWhat is Epi - Lasik ? Epi-LASIK is a laser vision correction procedure designedto treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), andastigmatism. Unlike LASIK, Epi-LASIK does not require the creationof a corneal flap. As a result, people with thin corneas or otherconditions that could contribute to LASIK complications may besuited for the procedure.
  13. 13. Epi-lasik laser eye surgery As in other laser eye surgery procedures, Epi-LASIK beginswith the use of anesthetic eye drops to numb the eyes. Aninstrument called an epikeratome is then used to isolate a thinlayer of tissue in the epithelium (the outer layer of the cornea). Theepithelial sheet is moved aside and an excimer laser is used tocarefully reshape the cornea. Once laser treatment is complete, the epithelial sheet is gently replaced and allowed to adhere withthe aid of a special contact lensFollowing Epi-LASIK, patients usually experience improvements intheir vision around the third or fourth day, with most patientsbeing able to drive in about a week. Vision may continue toimprove for a period of up to several months. While the recoverytime following Epi-LASIK is somewhat longer than with LASIK, theprocedure may produce fewer flap complications because it doesnot penetrate the cornea.
  14. 14. As a means of laser eye surgery, Epi-LASIK offers many advantages. The following benefits have been reported in association with theprocedure:• Able to treat patients with thinner corneas• Reduced incidence of flap complications• Lower rate of dry eye syndromeWhat is medical tourism?Medical tourism, also known as health tourism or health travel, isa term that describes travelling to a foreign country for medical, dental, or cosmetic treatment.
  15. 15. It involves the benefit of cost effective treatment, private medicalcare, in collaboration with the tourism industry. The concept ofmedical tourism is fast growing in India and people from differentpart of the world are choosing India as their desired destination. Why Choose India?Medical tourism is a rapidly growing sector in India and millions ofmedical tourists from all over the world have come here toexperience a world-class healthcare service. In 2010, about 600,000 patients travelled to India from over 30countries for treatment, including the USA, Canada, UK, Russia, theMiddle East and Africa.According to a study by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII)on healthcare, after software, the medical tourism industry ispoised to be the next big success story in India.
  16. 16. . It has predicted that the industry will grow to earn additionalrevenue of $2.3 billion by 2012 and will soon account for a majorshare of the country’s revenue. There are several reasons behind this tremendous growth:Patients come to India to get specialized treatments not availablein their home country. Indian hospitals excel in performingcomplex cardiac surgeries, kidney transplants, bone marrowtransplants, orthopedic surgeries, infertility treatments amongsttheir wide repertoire.India provides world-class quality treatments at a fraction of thepriceof developed countries. The cost of medical treatment inIndia is generally one tenth of western countries and among thecheapest in Asia.India has state of the art medical institutes and hospitals ofinternational standards with highly qualified medical professionals.
  17. 17. These centers are backed by high quality equipment andtechnology. This fusion of highly qualifiedstaff assisted by the latestequipment gives India the edge over other countries. With hospitals and clinics in every region including urban, semi-urban, or rural parts of the country, India has ample choice interms of preferred destinations. In countries such as Canada and the UK, patients almost alwayshave to wait weeks and sometimes months to avail of medicaltreatments. In India the consultations with the doctors are promptand patients receive a turnaround to their treatment plan at aquicker pace.As English is a commonly spoken language in India, the patient willbe comfortable communicating with the doctors.
  18. 18. Medical tourists find that the cost of their treatment (including thereturn airfare, holiday and accommodation) leaves them with atotal bill substantially less than they would have spent just onhaving the procedure in the UK.Why Arman There are several concerns that flicker in the minds of theforeigners who come for treatment to India, particularly for firsttime fliers. The first among them is which hospital to choose fortheir treatment.India is flooded with hospitals, medical centers and hotels whichhave their websites that attract the foreign patients. This makesthem even more confused and the complexity of decision makingbecomes a challenging task. We, at Arman can address all these concerns and issues by actingas intermediary with hospitals, clinics, surgeons, hotels.
