  2. 2. <ul><li>“ Metadata is sometimes seen as the magic bullet that will save us all and provide some order to the chaos that is hidden behind the walls of every media organization. It is not going to accomplish a solution unless we use it thoughtfully.”(Cliff Wootton, 2007) </li></ul>
  3. 3. Definition & Use <ul><li>Metadata is “data about data” </li></ul><ul><li>An index that collates references to information contains metadata. It can be implemented physically with a set of handwritten record cards e.g. – library. </li></ul>

Metadata facilitates: <ul><ul><ul><li>A standardized way to locate network-accessible material </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>A consistent descriptive framework to store properties of the material </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Facilitates queries that are more precise </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>A degree of vagueness for queries </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Groups objects into sets </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Provides an order by which objects can be ranked </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Access control </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Commercial value and business logic support </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Conversion and reuse for other purposes </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>Industrial strength workflow automation </li></ul></ul></ul>

Difference between essence data and metadata <ul><li>Essence data is the actual information product while metadata is the data about the essence data </li></ul><ul><li>The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) and Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE) decided to clarify definitions. </li></ul><ul><li>Essence data – describes any data that describes the text, pictures, sound or moving images, Metadata – describes the properties of the essence data, Content – combining essence data and metadata together and Asset – is some content plus its rights-management properties. </li></ul>

Standards <ul><li>The Dublin Core Metadata Initiative has released a number of recommendations focused on standardizing the structure and vocabularies used across a number of applications. </li></ul><ul><li>ISO 15836:2003 and ANSI/NISO Z39.85 - 2001 represent integration of these recommendations into formal standards. </li></ul><ul><li>Many industry associations have produced ' standards for the information associated with their documents. </li></ul>

USE of essence and metadata: where and when <ul><li>In digital TV workflow process: </li></ul><ul><li>Essence data is the footage that might be cut and edited to a desktop computer using for example – Apple’s Final Cut application. </li></ul><ul><li>Metadata’s use in production, editing, and broadcast provides assistance with such as </li></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>researching, </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>developing and planning the program ideas, commercial planning, budgeting, and controlling, </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>technical systems management, paying the correct cameraman to go out on a shoot, </li></ul></ul></ul><ul><ul><ul><li>capture, ingest, logging, postproduction, media sales, publishing, marketing, ensuring programs are broadcast at the right time etc. </li></ul></ul></ul>
  8. 8. More on Metadata <ul><li>Metadata tagging – They are information inserted into the &quot;head&quot; area of your web pages. Other than the title tag, information in the head area of the web pages are not seen by those viewing the pages in browsers. </li></ul><ul><li>Metadata dictionary - In 2001, SMPTE Metadata for Broadcast and News Media conference highlighted more than 70 ongoing metadata standards-related activities. </li></ul>
