International Mediterranean Sardinian Wine

  1. 1. Sardinian Wine BY
  2. 2. SUMMARY We are pleased to introduce premium Sardinian vineyards represented Globally by International Mediterranean for distribution in the Middle East, Africa and Asia. The presentation will cover an overview of Sardinia as a wine producing region, as well as the unique wines available and their successes internationally.
  3. 3. ABOUT International Mediterranean (IM) has been exporting quality products from Sardinia for several years. IM works closely with hand picked producers of wines and choice other foods. The managers of the company have many decades of experience working with vineyard owners and the Sardinian Government. Today IM is presenting five vineyards producing high quality wines for export to the Middle East. Grand Gold Medal 2013
  4. 4. ABOUT SARDINIA Sardinia is at the epicenter of European wine making.
  5. 5. ABOUT SARDINIA Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean Sea and an autonomous region of Italy. The combination of hills and plains, coastal regions and inland areas offers a diversity of topography and a microclimate ideal for vine growing. A handful of producers are creating high-quality wines, which are gradually gaining international recognition. One of Sardinia’s industries is that of cork so most Sardinian wines have natural corks. Sardinia's terroiris full of benefits for winemaking. The combination of hills and plains, coastal regions and inland areas offers useful diversity of topography and microclimate. To further these benefits, the available soils and bedrocks vary from granite, limestone and sandstone to mineral-rich clays and free-draining sands and gravels. Located between 38 and 41 degrees north, the island lies at the southern edge of European viniculture, but thanks to the cooling effects of the Mediterranean, the maritime climate here is more forgiving than in other regions at this latitude (e.g. Greece and Turkey).
  6. 6. SARDINIAN GRAPE VARIETIES The portfolio of varieties planted in Sardinian vineyards bear little resemblance to those in any other Italian wine region. One finds varieties of French and Spanish origin, exemplified by Grenache (called Cannonauin Sardinia). Some believe that the grape originated in Sardinia, and was taken back to Spain by the Aragonese, who occupied the island in the 14th Century. There is also the Cagnulari, a rare grape variety from Sardinia, grown mostly in the island’s northwestern quarter, where it is used to produce full-bodied red wines. Cagnulari is seldom found outside Sardinia and are regarded as one of the island’s many regional specialties. The fruit profile can range from red berries through to spiced plums and notes of black pepper. Ample tannins support the wine, making it worthy of a few years aging. Vermentinogrape: The origin of the Vermentino grape is uncertain being more widely planted on Corsica and southern France. There is even a school of thought supporting the theory that the Vermentino grape originated in the Middle East. It is certainly the most loved white produced in Sardinia. Carignanoin Sardinia produces spicy reds with lively acidity and soft tanins, accentuated with subtle herlbal notes in the finish. A great alternative to Chianti wines. Aside from the better-known grape varieties mentioned above, the island makes use of several exclusive varieties, including Monica, Nieddera, Vernaccia, Bovale , Nasco, Malvasivo, Moscato and BarberaSarda.
  7. 7. SARDINIAN GRAPE VARIETIES “THE BEST RED WINE FOR YOUR HEALTH IS CANNONAU AND COMES FROM SARDINIA, HOME OF THE MOST MALE CENTENARIANS IN THE WORLD” DR OZ ON THE OPRAH WINFREY SHOW It is widely believed that the Cannonau wines from Sardinia have the highest levels of polyphenols of any wine. Polyphenols are full of antioxidants and wonderful for your arteries.
  8. 8. WHY SARDINIAN WINE with Int. Med. THE BEST GRENACHE IN THE WORLD 1 Grand Gold Medal at the “Concours Grenaches du Monde” In Perpignan, France 2013 In January 2013 a Cannonau Wine from the Contini vineyard was voted the best Cannonau/Grenache from 300 wines entered by seven countries. There are around 330 individual DOC titles, each with a set of laws governing its viticultural zone, permitted grape varieties and wine style. • IGT (IndicazioneGeograficaTipica) was introduced in 1992, to allow a certain level of freedom to Italy's winemakers. Prior to 1992, many wines failed to qualify for DOC – not because they were of low quality, but because they were made from grape varieties (or blends) not sanctioned under DOC laws. The IGT classification focuses on the region of origin, rather than grape varieties or wine styles.
