  1. 1. THE GRAMMAR OF A VAASTU BASED ‘NAALUKETTU’(TRADITIONAL DWELLING IN KERALA)
  2. 2. STRUCTURE OF PRESENTATION• GRAPHIC DESCRIPTION OF THE BUILDING TO BE ANALYSED (CASE STUDY)• A VERY BRIEF GLIMPSE OF THE BASIC RULES OF VAASTU AS FOLLOWED IN THE CASE STUDY• RULES FOLLOWED IN SHAPE GRAMMAR• ANALYSIS OF THE HOUSE-2D AND 3D• INFERENCES AND CONCLUSION• REFERENCES
  3. 3. THE‘NAALUKETTU’(‘PADINJAREDATH MANA’ IN CHERPU, KOLLAM)
  4. 4. A FEW PRINCIPLES• THE BASIC CONFIGURATION OF BLOCKS IN COURTYARD FORMAT WAS USED AS A MODULE AND PERFECTED AS A UNIFIED SPATIAL AND STRUCTURAL SYSTEM ADAPTED TO CLIMATIC AND SOCIO CULTURAL CONDITIONS.• THE ENERGY FIELD-’MANDALA’- COMPRISING GRIDS, DIAGONALS AND NODES FORMED THE BUILDING CODE FOR SPATIAL PLANNING, PROPORTIONS, DOORS AND WINDOW POSITIONS AND FUNCTIONAL LAYOUT IN TRADITIONAL DOMESTIC ARCHITECTURE.
  5. 5. EXAMPLES
  6. 6. A FEW PRINCIPLES• LARGEST SQUARE AREA IN PLOT DEMARCATED• THROUGH THE APPROXIMATE CENTER, E-W AND N-S AXES MARKED• (IN THE CASE OF LARGE PLOTS, THERE ARE PRINCIPLES OF PAADAVINYASAM AND VEEDHIVINYASAM TO CHOOSE THE HOUSE LOCATION OR GRIHAMANDALA. THOSE DETAILS ARE NOT IN THE SCOPE OF THIS STUDY).• THE ORIENTATION OF THE HOUSE IS DECIDED BASED ON ‘YONI’- THE REMAINDER OBTAINED IN PERIMETER OF HOUSEX3/8. IF REMAINDER IS 1, ORIENTATION TOWARDS EAST, 2-SE, 3-SOUTH ETC. ODD YONIS ONLY ARE AUSPICIOUS-PERIMETER ADJUSTED TO GET ODD YONIS.• BASED ON THE RIGID PRINCIPLES, IN FACT, A WIDE RANGE OF BUILDING DESIGNS CAN BE DONE. IN THIS STUDY, ONLY ONE EXAMPLE OF A NAALUKETTU IS BEING CONSIDERED.
  7. 7. • FROM EKASALA-THE SMALLEST BASIC DWELLING UNIT- TO CHATURSALA- THE NAALUKETTU.
  8. 8. DECIDING THE SIZE OF COURTYARD
  9. 9. GRAMMAR OF PADINJAREDATH MANA• THE CENTRAL COURTYARD IS THE GENERATOR OF THE FORM. IT IS MARKED AS THE INITIAL SHAPE.
